Vikings Suddenly Have A Daniel Jones Question They Can't Ignore

Amid swirling trade discussions, the future of quarterback Daniel Jones hangs in the balance as contenders weigh their options in an unpredictable market.

The Colts’ quarterback fire sale may not be finished yet.

ESPNFL reported this week that Indianapolis has been in trade talks involving Daniel Jones, with the team speaking to multiple clubs. The report names the Ravens as one team that checked in on Jones before they moved on and struck a deal with the Cardinals for Jacoby Brissett, whose drop from No. 1 to No. 3 on the depth chart made it obvious he was available.

Minnesota is the other team specifically tied to Jones, though the report frames that interest as speculation. Still, the Vikings are the clearest fit on paper among the teams mentioned.

They’re the only current contender that appears to have a real need for a starter, and they’re one of just two contenders - along with the Giants - where Jones has direct experience. A reunion with New York, though, doesn’t seem to be in the cards for either side.

The market could change fast, of course. One injury to a starting quarterback this weekend could send another contender scrambling.

That kind of deadline domino effect has happened before, including 15 years ago when a broken collarbone to Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell led to a quick move for Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer. Three years ago, the Vikings were forced into action when Kirk Cousins suffered an Achilles injury two days before the deadline, pushing them into a deal with the Cardinals for Josh Dobbs.

For now, though, the Vikings may be the only team with real interest unless a starter goes down and opens up a new lane.

Jones himself matters in all of this, too. If he’s unhappy that the Colts have already started selling off pieces after a 2-5 start that included an overtime loss to the Chiefs and a tight battle with the then-unbeaten Vikings, he’d have every reason to prefer a move to a contender.

The Vikings had wanted to keep him after the 2024 season, but Jones chose Indianapolis because he saw a better path to winning the job there over Anthony Richardson than he would have had over J.J. McCarthy in Minnesota.

If Minnesota is willing to hand him the starting job right away, that would likely look a lot better to him than riding out a lost season in Indianapolis.

There’s also a contractual wrinkle that gives Jones some leverage. His 2027 roster bonus and base salary, which become fully guaranteed in March for $10.51 million, are currently guaranteed for injury.

ESPNFL noted that Jones could waive that injury guarantee to speed up a deal. If he doesn’t, that could complicate any trade, since a prospective team may not want to take on the risk of an eight-figure guarantee.

At the moment, the Vikings look like the most plausible landing spot. A trade becomes even more realistic if Minnesota loses to the Bills on Monday with Carson Wentz at quarterback.

There’s also a chance the Vikings have already made up their minds and a deal is simply being held until after Week 9 ends, win or lose. And if Jones gets hurt against the Cowboys on Sunday, that would likely end the trade conversation entirely.

That’s why his status in that game matters so much. If the Colts pull him quickly, it could be a sign he’s already on the move.

Vikings Suddenly Make Sense In One Trade Rumor Fans Can't Ignore

The quarterback market has a way of turning strange in a hurry, and Daniel Jones is suddenly part of that conversation again. ESPN reports the Colts have already moved on from Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner, and even after giving Jones a two-year extension in March, they have still been fielding interest from other teams looking for help under center.

For Minnesota, the fit is easy to understand. The Vikings have been searching for answers on offense, and Jones comes with a built-in link to Kevin OConnell, which is why the rumor has real traction around the league. Baltimore was among the teams that checked in, but the Ravens went in a different direction, leaving Minnesota as one of the more logical places to watch if this situation keeps developing. Odell Beckham Jr. Suddenly Looks In Play For Vikings Against Buffalo

Odell Beckham Jr. may not have gotten on the field for the Vikings in Week 5, but the path toward his debut in Minnesota has reopened quickly. The team signed Beckham to the practice squad and elevated him to the active roster last week, only to leave him inactive after Justin Jefferson was cleared to play, but the veteran receiver has continued working with the group and remains part of the conversation as Minnesota prepares for Buffalo.

Kevin O'Connell has said Beckham has looked good in practice, and the Vikings are weighing another elevation before Monday night. An injury to Jauan Jennings has helped create the opening, putting Beckham back in position to potentially suit up sooner rather than later as Minnesota sorts through its receiver decisions ahead of a tough matchup with the Bills. Vikings Head To Buffalo With Their Biggest Question Suddenly Center Stage

Minnesotas trip to Buffalo has taken on a different kind of urgency with the quarterback situation suddenly front and center. The Vikings are turning to Carson Wentz for Monday nights game against the Bills, a move that puts the spotlight on a roster that has otherwise leaned on its defensive strengths while trying to keep the season on track.

Wentz brings plenty of familiarity and plenty of questions, and the stakes around this one go beyond a single primetime matchup. A strong showing would help stabilize the conversation around Minnesotas direction, while a rough night could sharpen the pressure on how the team approaches the weeks ahead and what it decides to do next.
