The Vikings’ backfield took a hit just one week into the season, and Jordan Mason is the one heading to injured reserve.
Minnesota announced Tuesday that Mason, who left Week 1 with a thumb injury, has been placed on IR and will miss at least the next four weeks. The move comes after Mason carried 15 times for 59 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings’ win over the Green Bay Packers. Aaron Jones handled 12 rushes for 40 yards and a touchdown in the same game, giving Minnesota a productive one-two punch before the injury news forced an early reset.

The setback is especially frustrating for Mason after a 2025 season in which he appeared in 16 games during his first year with Minnesota. Before that, he had built a reputation in San Francisco as a dependable option behind Christian McCaffrey, whose own injury history often left the 49ers leaning on Mason.
With Mason sidelined, the Vikings are turning to DeeJay Dallas for more work. Dallas, a seven-year veteran, was elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster and should see his role expand.
Minnesota originally signed him to the practice squad after he spent 2025 with the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars, where he totaled three carries in six games. His most notable production came with the Seattle Seahawks, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2020 out of Miami.
Dallas has 124 career carries for 538 yards and four touchdowns.
The Vikings had already started lining up contingency plans on Tuesday by bringing in three running backs for tryouts. Jerome Ford was the only one with significant NFL experience, and Minnesota signed him to the practice squad.
Ford spent four seasons with the Cleveland Browns and has 340 carries for 1,463 yards and seven touchdowns in his career. He also played in 13 games for Cleveland last season.
Demond Claiborne, whom the Vikings drafted in April, was inactive against Green Bay, so Minnesota is clearly not ready to lean on the rookie yet. And while the team searched for answers at running back, Minnesota native Emmett Johnson went undrafted before turning heads for the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night football.

ESPN insider Kevin Seifert reported the team tried to trade up to No. 3 to take Drake Maye, but could not get a deal done with the Patriots, leaving them to stay put and draft J.J. McCarthy at No. 10.
Since then, Minnesota has already moved on to Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz on the depth chart, while Maye has gone to New England and immediately turned the Patriots into a problem for the rest of the league.
