J.J. McCarthy’s hold on the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback picture looks shakier by the day, and the number that keeps hanging over this conversation is 10.
That’s how many starts McCarthy has made since the Vikings took him 10th overall in 2024. He missed his rookie year with a knee injury, then got into 10 games last season and put up a line that didn’t exactly lock down the job: 140 completions on 243 attempts for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, along with 181 rushing yards and four rushing scores. His passer rating settled at 72.6.
Now Minnesota has added Kyler Murray on a one-year free-agent deal, bringing in a quarterback with seven seasons and 87 starts in Arizona and a 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year award on his résumé. Murray still hasn’t been officially named the Vikings’ 2026 starter, but all signs point to him getting the first shot at Kevin O’Connell’s offense. Even with five weeks left before the regular season, McCarthy’s future is suddenly the biggest storyline in the building.
The historical angle is what makes this situation feel so unusual. On SKOR North’s “Purple Daily” podcast, Phil Mackey dug into top-15 quarterback busts from the last 40 years and found only two who got fewer than 11 starts from the team that drafted them: Trey Lance, who started four games for San Francisco, and Andre Ware, who started six for Detroit.
That’s the company McCarthy is flirting with if Minnesota moves on this quickly. Mackey put it bluntly: “This would be one of the quickest pullings of the plug of any top 15 drafted quarterback in our lifetimes if they didn’t give J.J. McCarthy another start."
Christian Ponder offers another Minnesota-specific comparison. Drafted 12th overall in 2011, he made 36 starts for the Vikings and finished with a 14-21-1 record, with his best year coming in 2012 when Minnesota went 10-6. And plenty of other first-round quarterbacks who didn’t work out - Jake Locker, Cade McNown, Heath Shuler, Josh Rosen, JaMarcus Russell and Zach Wilson - all got longer chances than McCarthy has so far.
Judd Zulgad sees the next chapter as a possible exit rather than a long rescue mission. “I think there’s a better chance that McCarthy ends with 10 starts as a Viking and is traded than there is that he ever sniffs, let’s just say, 30 starts.”
Teddy Bridgewater is part of Minnesota’s quarterback history too, though he doesn’t fit Mackey’s top-15 draft sample because the Vikings picked him 32nd in 2014. Even so, Bridgewater got 28 starts over three seasons with the team.
For now, the contrast is stark: Murray arrives with 87 starts, McCarthy sits at 10, and O’Connell still hasn’t named a Week 1 starter.
