Vikings Stun Fans by Shopping $30 Million Star Player

As the NFL Combine begins, the Vikings are actively seeking trade partners for Javon Hargrave, navigating salary cap pressures and strategic roster needs.

The Minnesota Vikings are in a strategic push to optimize their roster ahead of the new league year starting March 11. A key part of this effort involves exploring trade options for defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, a significant acquisition from last offseason.

According to a report by Jordan Schultz on February 24, the Vikings have been in discussions with various teams about trading Hargrave, who is heading into his age-33 season. Hargrave, a two-time Pro Bowler, started 15 games last year and recorded 3.5 sacks during his first season in Minnesota.

However, the Vikings face a challenge in moving Hargrave, as it's widely known across the league that he might be released if a trade isn't secured soon. This knowledge could impact the leverage Minnesota has in negotiations.

The decision to potentially part ways with Hargrave is driven by several factors, including his age, recent performance, and the financial flexibility it would provide. By releasing him, the Vikings could free up $11 million in cap space for 2026, which is crucial given their current financial situation.

Hargrave's contract includes a base salary of $14.2 million in 2026, part of a two-year, $30 million deal. Teams interested in Hargrave might prefer to wait for his release, allowing them to negotiate a more team-friendly contract.

The Vikings are tasked with clearing over $43 million to become salary cap compliant. This financial maneuvering is essential not only for cap compliance but also to bring in competition for quarterback JJ McCarthy, secure a starting center, and address potential gaps in the secondary this offseason.
