The NFL has unveiled the compensatory draft picks for the 2026 NFL Draft, and the Minnesota Vikings have found themselves in familiar territory. For the second consecutive year, the Vikings secured the top compensatory pick available, landing the 97th overall selection in the third round.
This comes as a result of Sam Darnold's move to the Seattle Seahawks last offseason. It's a déjà vu moment for Minnesota, who also snagged the 97th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after Kirk Cousins joined the Atlanta Falcons in the 2024 offseason.
Interestingly, the Vikings didn't stick with the 97th pick last year. Instead, they struck a deal with the Houston Texans, trading down to the 102nd overall pick, the final slot in the third round. With that pick, they selected Maryland wide receiver Tai Felton, adding a promising talent to their roster.
This year, the Vikings' third-round compensatory pick is their sole bonus selection. Across the league, 33 compensatory picks were distributed among 15 teams.
The Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, and Pittsburgh Steelers each received four compensatory picks, highlighting their strategic navigation of free agency losses. These picks are awarded based on the net loss of compensatory free agents from the previous year's signing period.
Additionally, teams can earn compensatory picks if a minority employee is hired as a head coach or primary front office executive by another team, although only one such pick was granted this year.
Stay tuned as we break down the Vikings' full draft position for 2026, now that all the selections are officially set.
