The Minnesota Vikings are two preseason games into August, and the offense has given people plenty to sweat about.
Saturday’s 13-3 loss was the first defeat of the exhibition slate, and it was an especially rough one to watch. Yes, the starters have barely been on the field, and yes, there’s still time for things to look different once the regular season arrives. But after joint practices, the night practice a couple of weeks ago and these first two preseason games, the overall picture on offense has been hard to ignore.
The quarterback play has been a big part of that. J.J.
McCarthy wasn’t sharp, and Max Brosmer was even rougher. Both young passers have looked lost, and the concern now is that they’re regressing under Kevin O’Connell’s tutelage.
McCarthy’s second preseason outing against the Ravens finished with 5 completions on 10 attempts for 81 yards, one sack and a 19-yard completion that was wiped out by a holding penalty. Brosmer, meanwhile, had a 4th-and-3 throw sail about three feet over his target’s head.
There is still the obvious preseason caveat here: Brosmer is a UDFA quarterback, and it may be fair to say some expectations were too high. It’s also possible McCarthy’s immaturity would have been a problem no matter where he landed in the 2024 Draft.
Still, the on-field result is the same right now. Both quarterbacks look completely lost.
The hope, of course, is that this is just August overreaction. Three weeks from now, the Vikings could be beating the Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium on September 13, and all of this might feel like a bad memory.
But the unease doesn’t stop with the backups. The same questions have followed Kyler Murray and the first team through spring work at TCO Performance Center. By most accounts, those struggles have been real too, even while the starters have mostly stayed out of view during preseason games.

The run game, which has been sold as a potential breakthrough, hasn’t offered much relief either. Minnesota has averaged less than four yards per carry through two preseason games, piling up 176 rushing yards without a touchdown.
Through the air, it has been even uglier. The Vikings have not topped 185 passing yards in either preseason game, and the offense has scored just 16 points total across the two outings. They also haven’t cracked 300 total yards in either game.
The defense, as expected, still looks top tier. But that was the lesson from last year too: if the offense stays this messy, the rest of it won’t matter.

J.J. McCarthys preseason debut for Minnesota was supposed to be a longer audition, but it ended early against the Baltimore Ravens after an undisclosed injury forced him out of the game. Before leaving, he had completed 5 of 10 passes for 81 yards, and Kevin OConnell said McCarthy was slated to play more before the injury limited his night. McCarthy has described the issue as minor and not something he expects to affect his availability.
Even so, the Vikings are still sorting through their quarterback depth chart, and McCarthys brief appearance only adds another layer to a competition that remains unsettled. With Kyler Murray entrenched as the starter, the backup spot is still very much open, and Minnesota now has to balance McCarthys recovery with whatever evaluation time remains in the preseason. Chris Kuper is wasting no time making an impression in Philadelphia. The former Vikings offensive line coach has taken over the Eagles room, and early preseason work has already pointed to encouraging signs from a group of backup linemen who have looked more organized under his direction.
For Minnesota, that kind of development brings back a familiar concern. The Vikings know how much a coach can shape the trenches, and Kuper now has a chance to prove himself in a new setting while his old team watches another familiar face try to build a line into a strength. J.J. McCarthys first full run at the Vikings quarterback job has not gone the way anyone in Minnesota hoped. The 2024 first-round pick was tasked with stabilizing a franchise that has spent years searching for long-term answers under center, but his 2025 season brought uneven production and too many turnovers, leaving the team with more questions than confidence as the new season approaches.
