The Minnesota Vikings are set to move ahead with Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback for the 2026 season, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. ESPN first reported the news on Tuesday.
That outcome had been the expected one after Minnesota signed Murray in March during free agency, but it still marks a clear direction for the franchise. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said the choice does not change the team’s commitment to developing 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy.
McCarthy, 23, did get some first-team work this summer, but his inconsistency made the call a fairly straightforward one for Minnesota. The Vikings are focused on 2026 and decided Murray was the quarterback they believe can deliver the quickest results.
Murray is still getting comfortable in the system, and early in camp there were some communication issues with his receivers. Even so, his willingness to attack vertically lines up with what O’Connell wants from the passing game.
The Vikings have also built parts of the offense to match Murray’s skill set. With assistant head coach Frank Smith - the former Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator - now on staff, the team has more shotgun and pistol looks in the playbook. Minnesota plans to use pass concepts from those formations alongside run plays that show the same look.
A few different factors pushed the Vikings in this direction. Murray became available when Arizona was willing to move on from him this spring. At the same time, McCarthy’s 2025 season was uneven, and the uncertainty around his development, including durability concerns and struggles with layering passes, led Minnesota to explore other options.
The bigger picture matters here, too. Patience with a young quarterback is easier when a team has already banked recent playoff success, and the Vikings haven’t.
The organization has not won a playoff game since 2019, and O’Connell still has not gotten past the first round as a head coach. Justin Jefferson is 27 and still winless in the postseason.
With expectations rising, the pressure to win now is front and center, and O’Connell and the Vikings believe Murray gives them the best chance to do it.
