The Minnesota Vikings have made their call at punter, and the nod is going to rookie Brett Thorson over veteran Johnny Hekker.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that Minnesota is waiving Hekker and moving forward with Thorson, the Australia native who won the Ray Guy Award at Georgia.
“The Vikings are releasing veteran punter Johnny Hekker, per source,” Pelissero wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Rookie Brett Thorson, the Australia native and reigning Ray Guy Award winner at Georgia, will be Minnesota’s punter.”
That decision settles one of the team’s offseason competitions as Minnesota continues getting ready for the 2026 NFL season. The punter job had been up for grabs throughout the summer, and Thorson ultimately won out after arriving from college with a strong reputation and a national award to back it up.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell addressed the situation after Minnesota’s 34-6 preseason finale loss to the Denver Broncos, pointing to the total body of work and the added responsibility that comes with holding.
“I think it's body of work. Obviously, the games are important, but we've got a bunch of kicks logged, and we'll take a look at it. You know, as well as the role of holding,” O'Connell said on Friday.
“And we're gonna have to make a decision there. Both guys have really, I think, really battled it out the right way,” O'Connell continued. “It's been awesome to see Johnny, you know, really kind of take Thor [Thorson] under his wing and just show that unbelievable leader and presence that Johnny's always been in the National Football League, but it's going to be a tough decision for sure.”
For now, the job belongs to Thorson, and the next step is seeing how he handles it once the games count. Minnesota opens Week 1 on Sept. 13 against the Green Bay Packers.
