The New York Giants kept shopping in Minnesota this week, and Jihad Ward is the latest Viking to head east.
On Wednesday, New York signed Ward off the Minnesota practice squad and moved him onto the active roster, giving the Giants another body for a pass rush hit hard by injury. Brian Burns tore his ACL in last Sunday’s win over the Titans, and head coach John Harbaugh confirmed Monday that Burns is out for the season.
Ward’s path back to the Giants is a familiar one. He played for New York in 2022 and 2023, and now he’s back with the organization after a short stint on Minnesota’s practice squad. Josh Tupou was released to create room.
A former second-round pick, taken 44th overall by the Oakland Raiders in 2016, Ward appeared in 17 games for the Vikings in 2024. He spent 2025 with the Tennessee Titans before returning to Minnesota earlier this month.
The move also gives the Giants a veteran edge rusher who already knows the building. Ward has never stayed with the same team for more than two straight seasons, but his 34 games and 20 starts with New York are the most he has logged with any club. His 5.0 sacks in 2023 were a career high, and he later matched that total in Tennessee.
John Harbaugh is a different head coach than Brian Daboll, who led the team in 2023. However, Joe Schoen remains the general manager. Ward has shown he can be useful when given a chance, and that history is part of why the Giants brought him back.
It also sets up an odd little wrinkle in New York: whether Ward or J.J. McCarthy gets on the field first. Ward already knows his role, while McCarthy has had trouble staying available and is currently behind Jameis Winston.

Vikings Finally Explained The J.J. McCarthy Trade Fans Feared
The Vikings spent the early part of the week cleaning up the kind of move that tends to linger with fans, and general manager Nolan Teasley finally laid out why the team sent J.J. McCarthy to the Giants. It was the sort of explanation Minnesota supporters had been waiting for, especially after the deal immediately raised questions about whether the quarterback had pushed for a fresh start or whether the team had simply decided to move on.
Teasley said the trade was not requested by McCarthy, which helped narrow the focus to the organizations own thinking rather than any private demand behind the scenes. Kevin OConnell also described the emotional exchange he had with McCarthy after the announcement, adding a personal layer to a transaction that had already hit plenty of nerves around the fan base. Undefeated Vikings Suddenly Have Two Big Week 4 Questions
The Vikings head into Week 4 at 3-0 with a home date against Miami, and the matchup brings a pair of questions that could shape the afternoon before the ball is even kicked. Minnesota is waiting on receiver Justin Jefferson as he works back from an ankle injury, while the Dolphins arrive still searching for their first win and carrying their own uncertainty around quarterback Kyler Murray.
Brian Flores adds another layer to a game that already has plenty of edge, since the Vikings defensive coordinator will be facing the team he once coached. Both clubs are expected to get a better read on their injury situations after their first practices of the week, which should go a long way toward clarifying what kind of game this becomes in Minneapolis. Vikings Passed On Rodgers For One Reason Fans Need To Hear
The Vikings had a chance to chase the familiar big-name option at quarterback, but they stayed with J.J. McCarthy heading into 2025 instead of bringing in Aaron Rodgers, even with Rodgers showing interest in joining the team. It was a bet on youth and continuity, and for a while it looked like Minnesota was willing to live with the growing pains that come with handing the offense to a young passer.
McCarthys rookie season never really settled in, though, as injuries and uneven play kept the Vikings from getting a clear answer on his development. Minnesota eventually moved on, trading him to the New York Giants for a 2027 fifth-round pick before signing Kyler Murray to take over as the starter, leaving the original Rodgers decision looking even more consequential as the franchise keeps searching for stability at quarterback.
