The latest Dianna Russini-Mike Vrabel fallout has now pulled the Vikings into the conversation, and Monday’s newly surfaced dashcam footage gave the whole thing a fresh twist.
Russini, a well-known NFL insider and media figure, resigned from The Athletic in April after photos surfaced that suggested a close relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, with both people married to other partners.
That backdrop made a separate story from earlier this year draw even more attention. Last week, the New York Times, which owns The Athletic, referenced a February appearance Russini made on the "Stugotz and Company" radio show, where she said she had FaceTimed an NFL head coach to help get out of a ticket for texting while driving.
The coach and team were not identified at the time, which left the story open to speculation until dashcam footage from the Jan. 19 traffic stop was obtained by The Center Square and published online Monday.
The footage suggests the original version wasn’t quite accurate. Russini did not FaceTime a coach, but she did appear to lean on her Vikings connections. In the video, she shows the officer a text exchange with Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell.
After being pulled over, Russini tells the officer she is an NFL reporter and says she "just broke that Sean McDermott got fired from the Bills."
"You know who I was on the phone with? Brian Daboll. He wants the job," she continues, before asking the New Jersey-based officer if he's a fan of the Giants or Jets.
“I’m a Vikings fan, unfortunately," the officer says a short time later, a line that will land with any Minnesota fan.
Russini then shows the officer her phone and what appears to be a text exchange with O’Connell. At the end of the clip, she says: "Your quarterback sucks, though."
That comment appears to be aimed at J.J. McCarthy, who spent most of last season as Minnesota’s starter. The interaction seemed to do the job, too - she was not issued a ticket.
Russini is no longer with The Athletic, but she had already been a familiar voice around Minnesota. She was notably consistent in reporting the Vikings’ interest in potentially adding Aaron Rodgers as a free agent two offseasons ago, and she also previously took aim at the local Vikings media for "lifting up" J.J. McCarthy ahead of the 2025 NFL season, when McCarthy was the starter but struggled mightily.
Now that the bodycam footage is out, there’s been fresh speculation - still unfounded - that Russini may have been drawing on information from inside the Vikings organization when forming her opinions on McCarthy, even as she publicly backed him.
It’s also entirely possible the explanation is much simpler: she just didn’t see McCarthy as a starting quarterback and used her connection with O’Connell to avoid the ticket.
The Vikings eventually added free agent Kyler Murray in the 2026 offseason, and Murray is expected to be the starter this coming season, with McCarthy backing him up.
