The biggest chess match, as usual, sits on the sideline. Brian Flores and Ben Johnson are back at it, and if you’ve watched these two before, you know there’s nothing casual about it.
They’ve been matching up twice a year since Flores arrived in Minnesota in 2023, with Johnson running Detroit’s offense through 2024 before taking over the Bears in 2025. Their 2025 meetings were split, and both games came down to late-game swings.

Those two scores matched his entire total from last season, and the timing couldn’t have been better after a 2025 campaign he and the organization would probably rather move past.
A lot of that frustration last year came back to quarterback play, but Jefferson also had some uncharacteristic mistakes and never looked fully comfortable in the passing game. This season, he looks like himself again, and Minnesota will need that to continue whether Kyler Murray or Carson Wentz is under center.
There’s also the matter of Kevin O’Connell’s record in this rivalry. He’s 6-2 against the Bears since becoming the Vikings’ head coach in 2022, and he’s unbeaten at Soldier Field at 4-0.
Last year’s trip to Chicago turned into a dramatic comeback, with O’Connell and J.J. McCarthy guiding Minnesota to a win in McCarthy’s first NFL start on Monday Night Football against his hometown team.
This version feels like it should be cleaner if Minnesota can get steadier quarterback play and use a year’s worth of film on Johnson’s Bears to its advantage. But against this Chicago offense, nothing comes easy.
