A Justin Jefferson trade rumor is the kind of thing that stops the NFL world in its tracks, and this one landed out of nowhere.
The Las Vegas Raiders have been floated as a possible landing spot for the Minnesota Vikings star, a blockbuster idea that would shake up the league if it ever got real. For now, though, it’s just that - a rumor with a lot of noise and not much certainty behind it.
The report came from Hondo Carpenter, who covers the Raiders for On SI. He said this week:
"I think you wait and let that Justin Jefferson thing pan out a little bit. Nothing's imminent.
I'm not saying anything is imminent. I just know that there's a potential that he may want to move on and he had his best play with Klint Kubiak.
I think and may have reason to believe that he would be amicable if he were to be moved to be reunited... with Klint Kubiak."
That Kubiak connection is the obvious thread here. Kubiak was most recently the offensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks en route to the Super Bowl, and he was hired this offseason as the Raiders head coach. Jefferson already worked with him in Minnesota, which is why the idea has at least a little logic to it on paper.
If Jefferson ever did decide he wanted out of Minnesota, a reunion with a coach he knows would make sense. The Raiders might also have another selling point soon: the promise of film from their No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
The timing of the rumor is what makes it so striking. Jefferson is coming off the biggest struggle of his career, with J.J.
McCarthy, Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer all having trouble getting him the ball consistently. Minnesota tried to address that this offseason by bringing in Kyler Murray, but it’s still unclear how much that changes the offense.
If the Vikings hit another rough patch and Jefferson keeps dealing with the same issues, the idea of him looking elsewhere would not be impossible to imagine.
Still, a deal happening anytime soon would be a surprise. The report itself makes that clear by saying "nothing is imminent."
Even so, it’s the kind of rumor that gets attention fast. A Jefferson trade would be a massive headline, and the Raiders have at least been mentioned as a team to watch if this story ever grows legs.
