Minnesota’s frustration after Kyler Murray’s concussion is easy to understand, but the likely NFL fallout from Javon Bullard’s hit may not satisfy anybody in purple.
Bullard was flagged for unnecessary roughness after the late, unnecessary, and avoidable shot that left Murray with a concussion in the season-opening win over the Green Bay Packers. The play came after Murray slid, and the tradeoff Bullard appeared to make was obvious: take the 15-yard penalty and remove the opposing quarterback from the game. Minnesota, though, still came away with the win as Carson Wentz delivered again, and the Vikings finished with 22 unanswered fourth-quarter points.
On ESPN’s “Get Up” Monday, Mike Greenberg brought up the Vikings’ anger over the hit, while Adam Schefter said he does not expect Bullard to be suspended. Schefter also said, “they felt like they should have gone after Bullard during the game,” though that left some room for interpretation about whether he meant the officials, the league office, or the Vikings themselves.
After the game, via ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, Vikings right tackle Brian O’Neill said he regretted not responding more strongly in the moment.
“It was so bang, bang. You don't want to freak out if you're wrong.
I was probably wrong to not freak out more than that. So I kind of wish I took a shot at him.”
O’Neill’s point reflects the tension in situations like that: you want a response, but you also risk drawing another flag and making things worse. Still, it would not be surprising if there were some quieter retaliation on Bullard when the tape is reviewed.
The more immediate certainty is financial. Bullard will be fined when Week 1 penalties are handed down on Saturday. A suspension, according to Schefter, is not expected, and it likely would have had to come through an ejection on Sunday to be seriously in play.
Bullard has not been fined or suspended for an on-field incident in his first two NFL seasons, which makes a suspension feel like a stretch for a first-time offender. A fine, though, is coming - even if the NFL’s system often feels inconsistent from one case to the next. And if that fine comes in lighter than Vikings fans expect, it will only add to the anger surrounding the hit.
