Adrian Peterson’s next Vikings moment now has a date.
Minnesota had already announced in May that the franchise’s greatest running back would be added to the Ring of Honor, but Tuesday brought the missing piece: Peterson will be honored at halftime of the Vikings’ game against the Buffalo Bills on November 9 in Week 9.
That matchup already had plenty of shine attached to it. The Bills are coming in for a “Monday Night Football” game, which gives the night a primetime feel before Peterson is even introduced. Now the celebration around him will only raise the temperature inside the building.
It’s a fitting spot for the first post-playing recognition Peterson is set to receive over the next few months. The Vikings chose a big stage, and they chose a game that should already have fans buzzing.
Peterson’s place in team history is beyond dispute. He leads the Vikings in rushing yards with 11,747, rushing touchdowns with 97, and yards per game at 95.5 after spending 10 seasons in Minnesota.
Drafted seventh overall in 2007, Peterson also carved out one of the most remarkable individual seasons the league has ever seen. He became the last non-quarterback to win NFL Most Valuable Player honors after piling up 2,097 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012, coming back from a multi-ligament knee injury to do it.
His Vikings run ended after the 2016 season, and he went on to play for the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks.
Peterson has not officially retired, but his last carry came with Seattle in 2021. He still sits fifth on the NFL’s all-time rushing list with 14,918 yards.
Only Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, and Barry Sanders are ahead of him among the backs listed above him, and all three are already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Peterson is eligible for Canton for the first time this winter, giving him another possible honor on the horizon.
For now, though, the Vikings have locked in the moment that will put him alongside the franchise legends. And they’ve done it on one of the biggest nights of the season.
