The Minnesota Vikings may have the kind of defense Brian Flores can work with, but there are still enough holes to keep the conversation going. The secondary brings questions at corner and safety, and the interior of the defensive line remains a major talking point even after the team added young talent.
Flores does have a strong edge-rushing duo in Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner, but the tackle spot is where the uncertainty really shows up. Jalen Redmond is there, yet the rest of the group still leaves plenty to be desired.
Minnesota tried to address that in the 2026 NFL Draft, taking Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks in the first round despite his broken foot having happened twice in nine months, then adding Domonique Orange in the third round. Even with those picks, the position still feels unsettled.
That’s why one trade idea has drawn attention: bringing in Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter. FanSided’s Wynston Wilcox floated Minnesota as one of three teams that should make a strong offer for the two-time Pro Bowler, and the fit is obvious on paper. As Wilcox put it:
"The Vikings don’t really have any player they could give up in a deal that wouldn’t gash this roster, so they’ll have to resort to draft capital, which could be a hefty price to pay. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles are at odds a bit, but he doesn’t have a potential out in his contract until 2028, according to Spotrac.
That means a move for J.J. McCarthy just wouldn’t make too much sense right now.
The Vikings don’t really have receiver depth either, so they’re stuck with giving up draft capital to land Carter.
That said, he’s a beast and would instantly make this defensive line better. They went the young route, releasing Javon Hargrave and then trading Jonathan Allen to the Cincinnati Bengals.
They drafted Domonique Orange and Caleb Banks as their future, but adding Carter would ensure they stay in championship contention. When you want stars on your team, it’s costly, but the Vikings can’t ignore how big of an addition Carter would be."
Carter has been one of the NFL’s best defensive tackles since the Eagles drafted him in the first round in 2023. Even with six games missed last season, he still made his second Pro Bowl in three years and put together 33 tackles, 12 quarterback hits, seven pass deflections, five tackles for loss, three sacks, and a blocked kick.
There are reasons a team would pause before making that kind of move. Carter has dealt with two separate injuries to his shoulders and heel, and he also comes with character concerns after being ejected from the Eagles’ Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys last year for spitting at Dak Prescott.
Still, the upside is hard to ignore. Carter would give Flores a true difference-maker up front and could push the defensive line toward top-10 status. He would also give Minnesota some insurance if Banks is not ready to play right away in 2026.
The biggest obstacle is money. Carter is expected to command at least $33 million per year, if not more, and that creates another difficult decision for a Vikings team that has already dealt with financial headaches this offseason. A trade is far from likely, but if Minnesota somehow landed Carter for a second- and fifth-round pick, it would be the kind of bargain that changes the outlook of the defense.
