Vikings Draft Move Sparks Speculation on Running Back Future

Vikings' strategic draft considerations could signal a major shakeup in their running back roster, spotlighting Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love as a potential game-changer.

The Minnesota Vikings are facing an intriguing decision regarding their backfield, with the spotlight on running backs Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason. As the offseason unfolds, the question looms: will both remain, or is a change on the horizon?

Aaron Jones, a seasoned veteran, finds himself at a crossroads as he enters the final year of his contract. Cutting him before March 15 could free up $8 million for the Vikings, while a post-March cut saves $6 million.

A trade before June 1, however, could net the team a substantial $10 million in cap space. With Jones potentially on the move, NFL analyst Charles Davis has thrown his hat into the ring with his first mock draft, suggesting the Vikings might eye Notre Dame's standout running back, Jeremiyah Love.

"Are teams undervaluing the running back position again? The Vikings cannot pass on a top-three talent in this year’s draft," Davis notes. Head coach Kevin O'Connell would likely relish the opportunity to integrate such a dynamic player into the offense.

Jeremiyah Love's college career with the Fighting Irish was nothing short of spectacular. After two consecutive seasons surpassing 1,000 rushing yards, Love capped off his collegiate journey with 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. His performance earned him third place in Heisman voting and All-American honors, cementing his status as a first-round talent.

This year's draft sees the running back position somewhat underappreciated, which could play right into the Vikings' hands. With Minnesota's rushing attack ranking a modest 23rd last season, averaging 108.3 yards per game, there's a clear need for an explosive presence in the backfield.

While Mason and Jones had their moments, neither provided the big-play spark the Vikings are seeking. It's worth noting that injuries along the offensive line also played a role in their struggles.

Enter Jeremiyah Love, a player capable of transforming an offense with his ability to handle 25-30 touches a game, whether rushing or receiving. His dynamic skill set makes him a threat every time he touches the ball.

For Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, adding Love to the mix could be a game-changer for the 2026 season, offering a fresh and potent dimension to the team's offensive arsenal.
