The Minnesota Vikings may be leaning on Blake Brandel at center this season, but a 2024 NFL redraft suggests they had a chance to solve that problem much earlier.
CBS Sports’ Zachary Pereles put West Virginia center Zach Frazier in Minnesota with the 17th overall pick, the Vikings’ second first-round selection of the night. After already taking a defensive back in DeJean, Pereles had Minnesota switch gears and grab Frazier, a player he described as being on his way to becoming one of the league’s best centers, if he’s not there already.
That hypothetical comes with some obvious sting for Minnesota. The Vikings’ interior offensive line issues have been a major storyline over the past two seasons, and center has become a particularly interesting spot after a series of changes.
Garrett Bradbury had started there since 2019, then left after the season. Minnesota replaced him with Ryan Kelly, who retired this offseason after missing nine games because of injury in 2025.
Brandel is now moving to center full time after previously handling the other four spots on the line. He also stepped in as an emergency center in 2025 and held up well after injuries hit Kelly and Michael Jurgens. The Vikings are clearly comfortable with what he can give them, but Pereles’ redraft points to a different path: one that would have landed a younger, healthier center in Frazier instead of Kelly last season.
Even if Brandel plays well in 2026, he’ll be 29 and doesn’t look like a long-term answer. Kelly, in theory, could have settled that spot for Minnesota while giving them solid play in 2025.
Pereles’ redraft also shifted Minnesota’s original 2024 first-round choice. Dallas Turner, who the Vikings actually selected at No. 17, slid to 26th overall in the exercise.

Brian Flores Is Becoming A Huge Problem For The Vikings
Brian Flores is heading into his fourth season as the Vikings defensive coordinator, and his name still carries the kind of head-coaching weight that keeps him on the radar around the league. After his run as Dolphins head coach from 2019 to 2021, he has remained one of the more closely watched defensive minds in football, even as he has yet to land another top job.
This offseason brought more evidence of that continued appeal, with interviews for the Ravens and Steelers opening the door again before closing without a hire. Analysts still view Flores as a coordinator who could work his way back into head-coaching consideration down the line, which leaves Minnesota in a familiar spot: benefiting from his presence now while knowing his stock may keep rising elsewhere. Another Vikings Quarterback Wrinkle Is Hovering Over J.J. McCarthy Camp Battle
Derek Carr has become a familiar name in Vikings quarterback conversations, and hes back in the mix again after saying in an interview that he is still training, staying in shape and could return to the NFL for the right situation. Minnesota has its own camp battle to sort through, but Carrs comments naturally revive the kind of speculation that has followed him before, including the Vikings connection that surfaced last spring and again around Super Bowl Sunday.
For now, the fit still looks like a long shot, even before the logistics come into play. Carrs conservative style and low air-yards profile have raised questions about how well he would mesh with Kevin OConnells offense, and any pursuit would also have to clear the hurdle of his current Saints contract. Unless the Vikings quarterback room takes an unexpected hit, this feels more like another background wrinkle than a real change to the race. [Read more 🡒]
