Vikings Could Get A Needed Backfield Boost Right After The Bye

The Minnesota Vikings may soon see a significant boost to their struggling offense with the anticipated return of running back Jordan Mason from injured reserve.

The Vikings have spent the first five weeks of the 2026 season in a pretty rare spot: 5-0, standing alone at the top while the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs are the only other unbeaten teams left.

Even with that spotless record, Minnesota hasn’t exactly looked like the kind of offense that scares everybody. The group has had its issues, and the team’s overall level of play has left some room for skepticism.

That’s why the latest update on Jordan Mason matters. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the running back, who has been on injured reserve since Week 2 with a thumb injury, is expected to return soon - potentially in Week 7, immediately after Minnesota’s Week 6 bye.

"Minnesota hops to get Jordan Mason (injured reserve, thumb) back in Week 7, post-bye," Fowler reports.

If that timeline holds, Mason would have a chance to suit up for the Vikings’ Week 7 game against the Indianapolis Colts. That would give Minnesota a much-needed boost in the backfield, where Aaron Jones Sr. has been carrying the load in Mason’s absence.

Jones has handled the job, but he’s also a veteran with injury concerns of his own, and the Vikings clearly would rather not lean on him that heavily for much longer. Getting Mason back would let Minnesota split the workload again, and that’s where this offense starts to look a lot more dangerous.

Mason’s return would also come after a short layoff. With the bye in Week 6, he’ll have missed four games and five weeks total since going on IR.

Before the injury, Mason opened the season with a strong outing, rushing for 59 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries in Week 1. He also comes in off a productive 2025 season, when he totaled 758 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 159 attempts while sharing the backfield with Jones.

And there’s more reason for optimism than just the ground game. Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, Aaron Jones Sr., and Mason all could be on the field together in Week 7 after the bye.

If that happens, the Vikings may finally have their offense back in full working order.

Vikings Fans Had The Same Thought After That U.S. Bank Stadium Sign

A digital sign outside U.S. Bank Stadium briefly had Vikings fans doing a double take this week, after it showed a No. 10 jersey with the name Hill on it. In a place where every little graphic can set off instant speculation, plenty of eyes jumped to the obvious football connection and wondered if the team was teasing something much bigger.

The explanation was a lot more ordinary, and a lot more local. The display was tied to a stadium employee with the last name Hill, while the fan buzz around Tyreek Hill never had any real footing. It was the kind of mix-up that says as much about the modern NFL as it does about Minnesota's own corner of it, where even an innocent anniversary nod can turn into a rumor in a hurry. [Read more 🡒]

Brian Flores Has The Vikings Defense Playing At Another Level

Byron Murphy Jr. has been part of enough defenses to know when a unit is clicking, and the Vikings cornerback made it clear that Minnesotas group is operating with a level of confidence that starts with defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Murphy pointed to Flores coaching and the defenses experience as reasons the Vikings have been so effective, a sign that this isnt just about individual playmaking but about the way the entire group is being put together.

The bigger story for Minnesota is how seamlessly the communication has carried over from one snap to the next. Murphy singled out that shared understanding as a major piece of the defenses success, which helps explain why the Vikings keep looking so composed even as other NFC North teams are dealing with their own injury updates and lineup questions. For a defense trying to stay among the leagues most disruptive, that kind of trust can be just as valuable as talent. [Read more 🡒]

Vikings Young Defensive Tackles Are Changing This Defense Fast

The Vikings have made a noticeable turn on their defensive front this season, and it has come from players who were supposed to be supporting pieces rather than the center of the story. Jalen Redmond and Levi Drake Rodriguez have given Minnesota real help on the interior, bringing energy, run defense and enough pass-rush presence to keep the line from leaning too heavily on the veterans the team counted on when it signed Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave.

Instead, the younger tackles have become part of why this defense has held up so well, offering the kind of sustainability Minnesota needed as the season has unfolded. Allen and Hargrave arrived with Pro Bowl rsums, but the Vikings are learning quickly that the most useful answers up front may already be on the roster, even if they were not supposed to be the names driving the discussion this early.
