Brian Flores remains the obvious Vikings name to watch in any future head-coaching cycle, but he wasn’t the only Minnesota assistant to surface in a recent conversation about the New York Jets.
With pressure building on Aaron Glenn after a Week 7 loss to the Miami Dolphins left him at 5-19 overall, NFL reporter Benjamin Allbright was asked for a short list of possible Jets candidates. He named four: Wes Phillips, Nate Scheelhaase, Eric Bieniemy and Brian Flores.

Flores belongs on that kind of list without much debate. The Vikings are 6-0 largely because of his defense, and he’s long been viewed as a head-coaching candidate if not for his ongoing lawsuit against the league and several teams.
What makes Allbright’s list notable is that Phillips came first. That may not mean much, but it is a little interesting given the other names involved: Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Flores.
Phillips, 47, has never been a head coach. He followed Kevin O’Connell from the Rams to Minnesota in 2022 and has served as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator since then, though he has not called plays outside of some preseason work.
That could become more relevant if O’Connell ever decided to hand off play-calling. That’s unlikely, but if it happened, Phillips would be the obvious choice to take over. A move like that would also give Phillips a meaningful boost on the résumé if he ever starts drawing head-coaching attention.
Still, the Jets are a tricky opening, assuming the job even comes open for 2027. The quarterback situation is unsettled, and owner Woody Johnson has a reputation that makes the job less appealing than it might look from the outside. For a coach with other options - or one without a previous connection to the franchise, like Glenn has - the fit is tough to sell.
Flores also comes with his own baggage in that conversation. During his first head-coaching stint with the Dolphins, there were reported tensions with owner Stephen Ross, including allegations that Ross wanted the team to tank and Flores refused.
There’s also some Jets history here: New York interviewed Flores before hiring Glenn in 2025. But Glenn was the clear favorite to land the job he had once held as a player, so that interview likely wasn’t a major factor.
As for Flores, it’s fair to assume he may not be eager to take on the Jets anyway.
Phillips, meanwhile, has never interviewed for a head-coaching job. He did turn down an opportunity to interview for an offensive coordinator role that would have included play-calling after his first year in Minnesota.
Whether any of this matters beyond a very early whisper is another question entirely. For now, Phillips is just another Vikings name loosely tied to a possible opening, and time will tell if that connection goes anywhere.

Vikings May Have Found The Easiest Way To Settle Kyler Murray
Kyler Murray has had four full games to settle into the Vikings offense, and the results have been uneven enough that Minnesota still looks like a team searching for the cleanest path to rhythm. The next chance comes against Detroit, a defense that has had its share of trouble this season, and the matchup points toward a place Minnesota can lean on without overcomplicating things.
T.J. Hockenson stands out as the obvious pressure valve in that plan. The Lions have been vulnerable in the middle of the field, which gives the Vikings a chance to keep Murray on schedule and let the tight end do the heavy lifting in the passing game. If Minnesota wants a simpler way to steady the offense, this looks like the kind of opponent that can make that approach work. [Read more 🡒]
Vikings Could Make One Offensive Move Fans Won't Stop Debating
With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the Vikings are at least doing their homework on offense. NFL insider James Palmer reported that general manager Nolan Teasley has been actively exploring trade options, with running back and tight end among the positions Minnesota is monitoring as it tries to sort through a stretch of injuries and keep the roster balanced.
The running back chatter is the part that will keep fans talking, especially with Minnesota already connected to Jonathan Taylor as a possible target. The Vikings also have multiple draft picks to work with, which gives them some flexibility if they decide to make a move, but for now the bigger question is how aggressive they want to be before the deadline passes. Vikings Running Back Need Just Put Jonathan Taylor Back In Play
Jonathan Taylors name has already been floating around the league as the Colts continue reshaping their roster, and the latest chatter only adds to the uncertainty. His wife, Ayanna Taylor, drew attention with videos expressing concern about Indianapolis changes after a series of trades, while Taylor himself has said he is aware of the rumors without spending much time on them and has backed her right to speak openly.
For Minnesota, the timing is hard to ignore. Reports have linked the Vikings to a possible pursuit of Taylor, and the teams interest at running back is no secret as it looks for ways to stay active in that market. Whether the conversation turns into something more concrete remains to be seen, but Taylors situation is one worth watching closely from a Vikings perspective. [Read more 🡒]
