The Minnesota Vikings took the field Sunday night at TCO Stadium in Eagan with a crowd on hand and both J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray in pads, still working through what has become one of the most talked-about training camp quarterback battles in franchise history.
Before practice, head coach Kevin O’Connell addressed the media and said the timeline for the QB decision has not changed. He didn’t offer any specifics about when that call will come, but for now the competition remains active.
O’Connell also said Murray is further along mentally in grasping Minnesota’s offense than he expected at this point in camp. Asked where Murray stands in the system compared to where he thought he’d be, O'Connell said: "I think mentally he's definitely probably ahead of where I thought." He went on to say there are some parts of the offense that are new to everyone.
O’Connell also used the pre-practice availability to run through several injury updates. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw and first-round draft pick Caleb Banks were given a scheduled night off as Minnesota prepares for tougher practices this week and joint practices against the Baltimore Ravens next week at TCO Performance Center.
Safety Jay Ward is in concussion protocol, though O’Connell said that was done out of extreme caution and that Ward is expected to be cleared sooner rather than later.
Defensive linemen Levi Drake Rodriguez and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins are also dealing with minor issues, described by O’Connell as “just a little banged up”. He said both are expected back on the field next week.
There was better news on Jordan Addison, who returned in full pads and was “pretty much full-go” Sunday. O’Connell said Addison will be close to full-go tonight.
For Minnesota, the injury picture appears relatively clean if these setbacks stay short-term. That matters, especially this early in camp, with the first preseason game set for Saturday against the Giants and the regular-season opener against Green Bay still a few weeks away.
There’s still time for the Vikings to sort through health concerns. There’s much less time to keep delaying the quarterback decision.
