The Minnesota Vikings are at the doorstep of training camp, and one question sits above the rest: when does the quarterback battle actually get settled?
On The Real Forno Show, Tyler Forness and producer Dave Stefano laid out a full position-by-position look at the roster, but the headliner was the J.J. McCarthy vs.
Kyler Murray competition. Forness pushed back on the idea that this one drags into the regular season, pointing to Kevin O’Connell’s own words: “We wanna make sure that by the time we play the Green Bay Packers, there’s been ample time to have the best possible offense we can have to help our football team.”
Forness sees August 23rd as the cleanest cutoff. That date comes right after the Ravens preseason joint practices, and in his view it gives the eventual starter enough runway to settle in before Week 1.
“Three-plus weeks of practice and then three weeks until the start of the season,” he said. “That’s gonna be your sweet spot.”
He added, “I think the 23rd is that date... it gives you three full weeks to roll with the starter.”
The rest of the episode dug into the rest of the roster, starting with the backfield. Aaron Jones is the expected lead back, but Jordan Mason got singled out as a real threat in the Vikings’ wide-zone system.
Forness made the case with a blunt assessment of Mason’s style: “Jordan Mason thrives in the wide zone, plus 3.5 yards per carry after contact - massive amount of success.” Behind those two, Zavier Scott has the edge over Demond Claiborne for RB3 because of what he can do on special teams.
At receiver, the top of the depth chart is familiar with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Jalen Jennings, but Forness and Stefano pointed to two names worth tracking: Dillon Bell and undrafted free agent Dontae Fleming. Bell has already created buzz during minicamp, while Fleming drew praise for making the most of limited chances.
“If you can find a way to make plays when you don’t have opportunities, what happens when you get them?” Forness said.
T.J. Hockenson was another player who came up as a bounce-back candidate.
Forness doesn’t see him as a finished product or a declining piece, and he expects a stronger year from the tight end. “If he’s good, gets like 750 yards, five touchdowns, that’s a pretty good option to have considering you’re gonna have three star wide receivers.”
The defensive front brought a different kind of concern. Forness said the Vikings have real questions about the depth behind Dallas Turner and Andrew Van Ginkel, and he was especially doubtful about Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins holding up on the edge.
“The second you ask him to bend the arc, it’s toast.” His answer was straightforward: add a veteran such as Jadeveon Clowney.
Linebacker also has a ripple effect tied to Jake Golday. Forness said Golday’s development could reshape that room, even putting Ivan Pace Jr.’s $3.52M salary in play as a possible cap casualty if Golday proves ready.
The specialists weren’t ignored either. The punter battle between Brett Thorson and Johnny Hecker is one to monitor, but Will Reichard remains in a different category. Forness projected a four-year, $30 million extension for the All-Pro kicker, calling his operation elite.
For Vikings fans looking for the clearest early map of training camp, the message from the show was simple: the quarterback race is the centerpiece, but there’s plenty bubbling underneath it across the roster.
