Vikings Are Starting To Feel Better About That Jonathan Greenard Trade

With Jonathan Greenard's injury struggles and the rise of new talent, the Vikings may unexpectedly be benefiting from their once-controversial trade.

Five weeks into the season, the Jonathan Greenard trade is starting to look a lot less lopsided than it did when Minnesota first agreed to it.

The Vikings moved on from Greenard this spring after he asked for a raise they weren’t willing to match, sending the pass-rusher to Philadelphia for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 third-rounder. It was a deal they didn’t exactly celebrate at the time, with interim general manager Rob Brzezinski saying it “was not something we're jumping around excitedly about.” But with a few weeks of 2026 in the books, the return is at least tilting Minnesota’s way.

Greenard’s side of the story has been defined by availability. He missed five games in 2025 with the Vikings, and in Philadelphia he has played only twice this season.

In those two appearances, he has recorded one tackle and no sacks. The bigger concern is the broader injury picture: a shoulder, a pec and an ankle have all cost him time, and now there’s a real question about what his next stretch will look like as he moves into his thirties.

That raises an obvious question for the Eagles, who gave Greenard a $100 million deal and have not gotten much back yet. Right now, the payoff they were buying feels pushed off to 2027.

Minnesota, meanwhile, has gotten solid early results from the player stepping into Greenard’s role. Dallas Turner leads the team with 5.5 sacks, and at 23 years old, he’s giving the Vikings exactly what they wanted on the edge: a young, rising difference-maker. The long-term outlook there is easy to see.

The other piece of the trade is much murkier. Jakobe Thomas, the safety Minnesota took with the 98th overall pick, was always going to be more of a project.

He missed much of the preseason because of a back injury and has been inactive for every game so far in 2026. Even with early worries at safety because of the struggles of Harrison Smith and Joshua Metellus, the Vikings have kept the third-round pick on the sideline.

Undrafted free agent Jacob Thomas is already ahead of him on the depth chart.

So while Thomas is nowhere near being written off, he hasn’t had a chance to change the conversation yet. Minnesota still has that extra 2027 third-round pick coming, which means the full verdict on the trade won’t be settled for a while. For now, though, both teams have reasons to be uneasy about what they got back.

The Eagles have a pricey pass-rusher who has barely been on the field. The Vikings have Turner producing and a draft pick who still needs plenty of time. That doesn’t make the Greenard deal finished business, but it does make Minnesota’s side look a lot better than it did on draft night.

Colts Are Walking Into A Brutal Test Against A Surging Vikings Team

The Vikings have spent the first month of the 2026 season looking every bit like one of the leagues early standard-bearers, joining the short list of undefeated teams while preparing for a Week 6 bye. Even with quarterback Kyler Murray working his way back from a concussion, Minnesota has had plenty to like, especially with his recent connection to Justin Jefferson giving the offense a sharp edge when it needed one.

Brian Flores defense has also helped keep the Vikings in that top tier, making this a team opponents have to prepare for on both sides of the ball. The pause comes at a useful time, too, with Minnesota waiting for its next test against Indianapolis on Oct. 12, a matchup that should tell us plenty about whether this surge is a fast start or something more lasting. Vikings Fans Are Bracing For One Stretch To Test This 5-0 Start

Five games into a 5-0 start, Vikings fans are feeling pretty good about where this 2026 season is headed. In a recent poll, 79% of respondents said the team is trending in the right direction, a sign that the early momentum has done more than just win over the standings. It has also raised the conversation beyond whether Minnesota is good and into how long this opening run can actually last.

The next real measuring stick on the schedule is already drawing plenty of attention, with most voters circling the upcoming Buffalo trip as the spot where the first stumble might arrive. Others are looking even further down the road, whether that means a tougher stretch after that or the possibility of carrying an undefeated record all the way to the Mexico City meeting with San Francisco in Week 11. For now, the optimism is real, but so is the sense that one of these high-profile games will tell the story of just how sturdy this start really is. [Read more 🡒]

Former Vikings Fan Favorite Faces Serious Off-Field Allegation

Cordarrelle Patterson, one of the more memorable playmakers from recent Vikings seasons, is back in the news for troubling reasons after an arrest in East Tennessee on Oct. 17. The former Minnesota fan favorite was booked at the Sevier County jail on a domestic assault charge, a jarring development involving a player whose return-style explosiveness once made him a constant highlight on special teams and a useful weapon on offense.

Patterson was released about 11 hours later on a $1,000 bond, and there has been no public release of additional details about the incident or any court proceedings. For now, the situation remains unsettled, with the available information offering only a stark headline and few answers about what comes next. [Read more 🡒]
