Vikings Activate Ty Chandler Just in Time for Crucial Season Moment

With the Vikings thin in the backfield, Ty Chandler's return from injured reserve could come at a pivotal moment in their playoff push.

The Vikings are getting a familiar face back in their backfield just in time for the holiday stretch. Running back Ty Chandler has officially been activated from injured reserve, clearing the way for a potential return to action as soon as Christmas Day.

Chandler had been sidelined since Week 1 after suffering a knee injury that landed him on IR before he could log a single touch this season. But after being designated to return on December 3, the clock was ticking - and Tuesday marked the final day he was eligible to be activated for the 2026 campaign. Minnesota made the move, and now Chandler is back on the 53-man roster.

While Chandler didn’t get the chance to contribute early this year, he’s no stranger to the Vikings’ offense. Over his first three seasons in Minnesota, he totaled 164 carries for 663 yards and three touchdowns, showing flashes of burst and versatility. He’s also chipped in through the air with 27 receptions for 201 yards - a skill set that could be especially valuable given the current state of the Vikings’ backfield.

That’s because Minnesota is dealing with some injury trouble at the position. Jordan Mason, who had been getting reps in recent weeks, suffered an ankle injury in Week 16 and was unable to practice on Monday. If Mason can’t go against the Lions on Christmas, Chandler could be called upon to shoulder some of the load.

It’s a timely return for a team still fighting to stay relevant in the playoff picture. Chandler may not have seen the field much this season, but with his experience and familiarity with the system, he could be a key depth piece - or more - in a critical divisional matchup.

The Vikings have leaned on a committee approach in the backfield throughout the season, and Chandler’s return gives them another option to mix into the rotation. Whether he’s getting carries, catching passes out of the backfield, or helping in pass protection, his presence adds a layer of flexibility to the offense.

We’ll see how much run he gets on Christmas Day, but one thing’s clear: Minnesota’s running back room just got a little deeper - and potentially more dynamic - at a crucial time.
