Odell Beckham Jr. Gives Undefeated Vikings Needed Help Fast

Odell Beckham Jr.'s latest move to the unbeaten Vikings is fueled by familiar connections and hopes of revitalizing their passing game.

Odell Beckham Jr. is back in a familiar offensive ecosystem, and the path to Minnesota came together fast.

After spending time at home with his son and considering his options, Beckham said a phone call from Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell helped push him toward signing with the 4-0 team. The connection mattered, especially because O’Connell was Beckham’s offensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams during their Super Bowl run.

“Life happens fast, but life in the NFL definitely happens faster,” Beckham said Wednesday. “It just seemed right.”

For Beckham, the fit wasn’t just about football. He said O’Connell’s interest made the decision feel clear.

“Go where you’re wanted,” Beckham said. “It seemed as if he wanted me to be here, and that was expressed to me. That feels good when you’re playing a sport like this where you’re laying your livelihood on the line.”

The move also drops Beckham into a locker room with plenty of familiar faces, and none bigger than Justin Jefferson. The two have Louisiana ties that go back to LSU, and Beckham said he saw Jefferson’s rise coming long before the rest of the league fully caught on.

“He was like this big at LSU,” Beckham said while motioning with his hand. “I’ve got a very good eye for someone who’s watching. Not just watching, but watching like, ‘I’m going to be you or better.'”

Beckham arrives with a résumé that still carries real weight. He was the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2014, made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons with the New York Giants and has 7,987 receiving yards and 59 touchdowns across 122 career regular-season games.

Minnesota’s offense could use the help. The Vikings rank last in the NFL in passing yards, and Jefferson missed the last game with a sprained ankle.

Beckham’s path back to this point has been winding. His return to the Giants this year at age 33, after he had been out of football in 2025, lasted only three games and produced one target with no catches. He also served a six-game suspension last year for failing a performance-enhancing drug test and did not sign with a team after that.

Before landing in Minnesota, Beckham had stops with the Cleveland Browns after a 2019 trade, then the Rams, where he joined midway through their 2021 championship season. In that playoff run, he caught 21 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns in four games. He later played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 and the Miami Dolphins in 2024.

Vikings Injury Report Puts Several Key Starters In Doubt For Sunday

The first injury reports of the week gave the Vikings an early look at just how much juggling may be required before Sundays game at Caesars Superdome. Minnesota and New Orleans both released their initial availability lists, and the Vikings side includes some familiar names near the top, with Justin Jefferson and Christian Darrisaw among the players worth monitoring as the week unfolds.

For Kevin OConnells staff, the bigger issue is less about one isolated absence than the overall practice picture this early in the preparation cycle. The Saints report brings its own concerns, with Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave also on it, which only adds to the uncertainty on both sides heading into the weekend. The next few practices will tell the real story, but for now Minnesota is dealing with a report that already has several starters in doubt. [Read more 🡒]

Vikings Still Have One Clear Path Even After Murray's Shaky Start

The early NFC quarterback picture already has a few familiar names under a microscope, and Kyler Murray is right there among them after a shaky start to the 2026 season. He is still viewed as a quarterback with enough talent to settle in as the year unfolds, but the opening stretch has left plenty of room for skepticism as the league starts sorting out which passers can carry their teams through the long middle of the schedule.

For Minnesota, that matters because the Vikings are watching the conference landscape with the same practical lens they use on everything else: which path still looks open, and which one is already closing. Jalon Daniels, meanwhile, is dealing with a far different early assignment as a rookie pressed into action because of injury, adding another layer of uncertainty to a quarterback group that is already hard to read. The upside for the Vikings is that the NFC still feels fluid, but the challenge is finding a route that remains clear once the season starts separating hopeful starts from real momentum. Vikings Backfield Problem Could Force A Huge Move At 4-0

The Vikings have raced to a 4-0 start, but the early success has not erased the questions around their offense, especially in the backfield. Injuries and a thin running back room have left Minnesota trying to patch together answers, even as the team continues to build around a roster that has otherwise found ways to win.

Odell Beckham Jr. landing on the practice squad added another layer of depth, but the bigger conversation may be whether Minnesota needs to look outside the building for a more significant fix. Saquon Barkley has emerged as a possible target from Philadelphia, though his hamstring issue and the Eagles willingness to consider future draft assets could complicate any move. [Read more 🡒]
