Enter veteran punter Johnny Hekker, who’s stepping into his 15th NFL season. At 36, he may not be the All-Pro powerhouse he once was, but Minnesota sees value in his experience, especially at a budget-friendly price.
Hekker's contract with the Vikings is a veteran minimum salary benefit deal, featuring a cap hit of $1,262,500 and a cash value of $1,487,500. Notably, $225,000 of his $1.3 million base salary is exempt from the cap. His base salary is fully guaranteed, and he receives a $187,500 signing bonus.
From 2013 to 2018, Hekker was a staple All-Pro, earning first-team honors four times. However, last season with the Titans saw a dip in his performance, with 370 return yards allowed and a net punt average of 40.3 yards.
His seven touchbacks were a career high, and he placed only 22 punts inside the 20-yard line. It raises the question of whether Hekker can bounce back.
For the Vikings, the financial risk is minimal. Hekker's cap hit is significantly lower than the $2 million Wright commanded last year, and far from the $8 million guaranteed Wright secured with the Saints. Despite Wright's solid performance last season, he faced stiff competition during training camp.
