When it comes to the Minnesota Vikings' quest for a quarterback this offseason, the options range from ambitious dreams to underwhelming choices. Nestled somewhere in between are realistic picks that promise solid competition and valuable mentorship for J.J. McCarthy, rather than outright replacement.
During the NFL Combine week, the quarterback market got a new twist. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Carolina Panthers have been receiving inquiries about Andy Dalton, hinting at a potential trade scenario.
Panthers GM Dan Morgan, speaking on "The Pat McAfee Show" during the Combine, mentioned that he hadn't engaged with teams yet but would allow Dalton to "explore" trade opportunities if they arise. Earlier, Morgan had expressed the team's intent to bring in someone to challenge Dalton for the backup role behind Bryce Young, and he’s been upfront with Dalton about this possibility.
Schefter’s report on the Panthers entertaining calls about Dalton conveniently followed Morgan’s comments.
For Vikings fans, this development adds another intriguing name to the list of potential quarterback options. Considering Dalton's connections, it's logical to think of teams where he has coaching ties. Joe Person of The Athletic pointed out a couple of potential fits.
"The Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets emerge as logical destinations, given their coaching staff’s ties to Dalton. Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich was the Panthers' head coach when Dalton joined in 2023, and Vikings quarterbacks coach/pass game coordinator Josh McCown was on Reich’s staff."
Dalton has embraced the veteran backup role over the past six seasons. With 169 career starts, he ranks fourth among active quarterbacks, consistently delivering solid performances throughout his career.
For the Vikings, Dalton embodies the ideal blend of competition, mentorship, and professionalism they might seek in a quarterback addition. His inclusion on the list of potential options makes perfect sense.
However, the list of quarterbacks the Vikings might consider to complement or compete with McCarthy is getting crowded. As league insiders start to narrow down the possibilities, Vikings fans are eagerly awaiting a decisive move in March, hoping for clarity on who will bolster their quarterback lineup.
