The Minnesota Vikings have been busy this offseason, navigating the financial landscape to clear over $40 million from their 2026 budget. With some savvy moves, they've brought in Kyler Murray and James Pierre, marking their only free-agent acquisitions so far. But the real focus has been on keeping their core intact, using every tool at their disposal, from re-signings to restructures and various tag options.
One standout move was placing an exclusive rights tender on breakout defensive lineman Jalen Redmond, pegging his 2026 salary at $1.075 million. This decision underscores the Vikings' commitment to retaining talent that has proven its worth on the field.
Redmond, who emerged as a key player last season, is set to negotiate a contract extension this summer. In the meantime, he's receiving a well-deserved $1.2 million bonus, thanks to the NFL’s Performance-Based Pay program. This program, which distributes nearly $550 million to players who outperformed their contracts, doesn't affect the salary cap but ensures players like Redmond are rewarded for their contributions.
In 2025, Redmond made a significant leap, playing in all 17 games with 15 starts. His snap count jumped from 24% in 2024 to an impressive 74% last season. Despite the presence of heavyweights like Javon Hargrave and Jonathan Allen, Redmond became a pivotal interior force, tallying six sacks, 62 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and eight quarterback hits.
With Hargrave and Allen no longer in the picture, the Vikings will be leaning on Redmond to anchor their defensive line once again.
On another note, Nashon Wright, a former Viking, topped the performance-based bonus list for 2025. After a brief stint in Minnesota, Wright found success with the Chicago Bears, playing 17 games and starting 16.
His five interceptions, including a memorable pick-six in Week 1, earned him his first Pro Bowl nod. Now with the New York Jets, Wright is a player the Vikings might wish they had kept, especially after enduring a challenging season with Jeff Okudah.
As the Vikings continue to shape their roster, these moves highlight the delicate balance of managing talent and finances in the NFL.
