Kyler Murray's Reunion Plan with Vikings Hits Unexpected Snag

Despite adding Kyler Murray, the Vikings' cautious approach in the offseason leaves their wide receiver options in flux.

The ink is barely dry on Kyler Murray's contract with the Minnesota Vikings, and the buzz is already building around which free agents might join the Pro Bowl quarterback in the Twin Cities. A familiar name popped up in conversations: Christian Kirk. Having shared the field with Murray both in college and the NFL, Kirk seemed like a natural fit to bolster the Vikings' receiving corps as a potential No. 3 option.

However, any dreams of that reunion were dashed when Kirk reportedly inked a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, as noted by NFL insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.

While Minnesota's cap space is tight-hovering just below $6 million according to OverTheCap.com-Kirk's contract with the 49ers is valued at $6 million. It's a figure the Vikings might have matched, perhaps by spreading the cap hit over several void years. Yet, Minnesota has signaled a conservative approach to spending this offseason, especially after last year's splurge failed to yield a playoff berth.

With Kirk off the table, the Vikings still have options in the free-agent market. Names like Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins, Hollywood Brown, Greg Dortch, and Brandin Cooks could potentially join forces with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, adding depth and experience to the lineup.

Should Minnesota choose not to pursue a veteran pass-catcher, it would indicate strong faith in their current roster depth, including players like Tai Felton, Myles Price, and Jeshaun Jones. Alternatively, the Vikings could look to the 2026 NFL Draft for fresh talent. Prospects such as KC Concepcion, Denzel Boston, Germie Bernard, Brenen Thompson, and Zachariah Branch offer promising potential to make an immediate impact.

While wide receiver isn't a pressing need for the Vikings, it would still be surprising if they didn't bring in new talent from either free agency or the draft before training camp kicks off this summer.
