Kirk Cousins delivered the kind of quarterback postgame message that sounds steady, professional and leader-like. He also slipped in the part Vikings fans have heard before: good words are nice, but the real proof has to show up on Sundays.
After the Raiders’ 45-17 loss to New England in Week 5, Cousins leaned hard into accountability. “They point the thumb, not pointing the finger, and just want to get better, want to learn, and get better together.”
Later, he made the point even more plainly: “It’s a great group,” Cousins said. “But we got to show it on Sunday.”
That loss also brought Fernando Mendoza onto the field for his first NFL snaps. With Las Vegas down by 28 and 6:06 left, Klint Kubiak pulled Cousins and gave the rookie a chance to get some live reps. Mendoza finished with six completions on eight attempts for 48 yards.
The setup in Las Vegas is different from the one Cousins knew in Minnesota, but the familiar thread is obvious. Kubiak coached him with the Vikings from 2019 through 2021 and ended that run as offensive coordinator. Now the Raiders have a veteran quarterback who knows the system and can operate it while the team develops a younger one.
The problem is that Cousins’ line can look clean while the bigger issues stay ugly. Through five games, he has thrown for 1,269 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Against New England, he went 19-for-28 for 243 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. That’s useful production.
It’s not a cure-all.
Minnesota fans know that story well. Cousins put up 33 touchdowns against seven interceptions for Kubiak in 2021 and still missed the playoffs.
A productive stat sheet never guaranteed the whole operation was fixed, and it didn’t do that in Las Vegas either. The Raiders allowed 536 yards, and Ashton Jeanty finished with 27 yards on 10 carries, marking his third game under three yards per carry this season.
Cousins also pointed directly at the pressure New England brought. He said the Patriots sent more rushers than Las Vegas could handle, and the offense didn’t finish its answers against the blitz. “I got to be better there.”
That’s the real tension around Cousins right now. He can still move an offense, and he can still speak like the adult in the room.
But the missed throws under pressure matter just as much as the tidy numbers. The Raiders need him and his receivers to identify those looks together and beat them before the free rusher gets home.
Mendoza’s debut gave Kubiak a tiny snapshot, not a verdict. The rookie was also asked about a specific play, saying he should have hit Deven Thompkins over the middle instead of scrambling short on fourth-and-4. It’s another detail for Kubiak to clean up while Cousins gets ready for Buffalo.

Colts Are Walking Into A Brutal Test Against A Surging Vikings Team
The Vikings have spent the first month of the 2026 season looking every bit like one of the leagues early standard-bearers, joining the short list of undefeated teams while preparing for a Week 6 bye. Even with quarterback Kyler Murray working his way back from a concussion, Minnesota has had plenty to like, especially with his recent connection to Justin Jefferson giving the offense a sharp edge when it needed one.
Brian Flores defense has also helped keep the Vikings in that top tier, making this a team opponents have to prepare for on both sides of the ball. The pause comes at a useful time, too, with Minnesota waiting for its next test against Indianapolis on Oct. 12, a matchup that should tell us plenty about whether this surge is a fast start or something more lasting. Vikings Fans Are Bracing For One Stretch To Test This 5-0 Start
Five games into a 5-0 start, Vikings fans are feeling pretty good about where this 2026 season is headed. In a recent poll, 79% of respondents said the team is trending in the right direction, a sign that the early momentum has done more than just win over the standings. It has also raised the conversation beyond whether Minnesota is good and into how long this opening run can actually last.
The next real measuring stick on the schedule is already drawing plenty of attention, with most voters circling the upcoming Buffalo trip as the spot where the first stumble might arrive. Others are looking even further down the road, whether that means a tougher stretch after that or the possibility of carrying an undefeated record all the way to the Mexico City meeting with San Francisco in Week 11. For now, the optimism is real, but so is the sense that one of these high-profile games will tell the story of just how sturdy this start really is. [Read more 🡒]
Former Vikings Fan Favorite Faces Serious Off-Field Allegation
Cordarrelle Patterson, one of the more memorable playmakers from recent Vikings seasons, is back in the news for troubling reasons after an arrest in East Tennessee on Oct. 17. The former Minnesota fan favorite was booked at the Sevier County jail on a domestic assault charge, a jarring development involving a player whose return-style explosiveness once made him a constant highlight on special teams and a useful weapon on offense.
Patterson was released about 11 hours later on a $1,000 bond, and there has been no public release of additional details about the incident or any court proceedings. For now, the situation remains unsettled, with the available information offering only a stark headline and few answers about what comes next. [Read more 🡒]
