Kevin OConnell Just Reopened A Painful Vikings Draft Debate

Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell reflects on the team's controversial 2022 NFL Draft choices, acknowledging a missed opportunity with star safety Kyle Hamilton.

Kevin O’Connell didn’t dodge the question, and he didn’t need much time to answer it.

Asked Thursday whether he ever looks back at the Vikings’ 2022 draft and thinks about Kyle Hamilton, the head coach gave a blunt reply: “I have a time or two, yes.”

That one line says plenty about how Minnesota’s first draft under Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has aged. What started as a busy night in April 2022 has turned into a full-blown regret session for a Vikings team that came away with 10 picks and, ultimately, none of those players still on the roster today. Jalen Nailor, a sixth-rounder, and Ty Chandler, taken in the fifth, stuck around the longest.

The draft began with Minnesota holding the No. 12 overall pick. Then came the move that changed everything: the Vikings traded all the way back to No. 32, where they selected Georgia safety Lewis Cine. That was Adofo-Mensah’s first draft pick as general manager, and it’s the one that still hangs over the organization.

Cine hasn’t come close to justifying that decision, while Hamilton has turned into the exact kind of player Minnesota passed on. In four seasons, Hamilton has made three Pro Bowls and three All-Pro teams, including two first-team nods.

At the time, plenty of observers had Minnesota eyeing Hamilton, who went two picks later to the Ravens. He looked like a natural fit for a team that could have seen him as Harrison Smith’s eventual successor. Instead, the Vikings slid back, chose Cine, and watched the safer, smarter-looking option become one of the NFL’s elite defenders.

Hamilton’s production backs up the regret. In his first 64 NFL games, he has 355 tackles, 8 sacks, 5 interceptions and 6 forced fumbles.

There were other directions Minnesota could have gone at No. 12, too. Jameson Williams, who went to the Lions at No. 12, was another obvious possibility.

Instead, the Vikings passed on the simplest path on the board and walked straight into a draft class that looks worse with each passing year. On Thursday, O’Connell was left to answer for one of the franchise’s most painful what-ifs.

Vikings Backfield Battle Is Making One Roster Decision Much Tougher

Aaron Jones is set to open the season as the Vikings lead running back after agreeing to a pay cut to stay in Minnesota, and Jordan Mason looks positioned to serve as the primary backup. That duo gives the offense a clear top two, but it also leaves the team sorting through a deeper group as roster cuts approach, with Zavier Scott, rookie Demond Claiborne and Jermar Jefferson all trying to force their way into the conversation.

Claiborne has been one of the more intriguing names in camp and preseason, flashing enough promise to keep the position group interesting well beyond the top two spots. For a team that wants dependable depth behind Jones and Mason, the competition has become less about filling a final seat and more about deciding which runner offers the best mix of upside, versatility and immediate value. J.J. McCarthy Has Plenty Riding On Vikings Preseason Game

The Vikings are back at U.S. Bank Stadium for their second preseason game, and the focus is less on the scoreboard than on the players trying to sort out their place on the roster. Baltimore is coming to town, the starters figure to get only limited work, and that leaves room for the evaluation process to tighten around a few key names, especially on the back end and among the younger pieces trying to make a case.

J.J. McCarthy sits near the center of it all, because his performance has to take a step forward if he wants to firm up the QB2 conversation. Jacob Thomas also bears watching after an impressive Week 1 showing, and Caleb Banks remains an intriguing project after a rough preseason debut while he continues working back from injury. For a team still shaping its depth chart, this is the kind of game where a few snaps can carry a lot of weight. [Read more 🡒]

Vikings Backup QB Battle Says Plenty About J.J. McCarthy Right Now

Kevin OConnell has already settled the biggest quarterback question by naming Kyler Murray the Week 1 starter, but the more interesting camp battle in Minnesota is happening a spot down the depth chart. Veteran Carson Wentz and rookie J.J. McCarthy are still competing for the backup job, and McCarthy is set to work as the QB2 in the upcoming preseason game, a small but meaningful marker in a race that has stayed open through the summer.

OConnell has made clear the Vikings are not rushing the decision, saying the staff will keep evaluating the position over the next few weeks before making a final call. For McCarthy, that means every rep matters a little more right now, because the backup conversation is also a window into how the team sees his readiness and where he stands in the long-term plan behind Murray.
