Kevin OConnell Is Feeling Heat Vikings Fans Never Expected At 6-0

Despite an undefeated start, media scrutiny grows on Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell as offensive decisions raise doubts.

Kevin O’Connell is sitting on the NFL’s best record, and somehow the noise around him is getting louder.

That’s the strange backdrop in Minnesota right now. The Vikings are 6-0 in O’Connell’s fifth season as head coach, yet the conversation around him has taken a sharp turn, with Stephen A. Smith unloading on him Wednesday on ESPN.

“Let’s be very, very clear: Kevin O’Connell may be a big-time coach in the National Football League, because he’s widely respected, [a] quarterback whisperer and all this other stuff. He’s lucky he’s got a damn job,” Smith said.

The criticism centers on one thing: the offense. Since the start of last season, Minnesota’s attack under O’Connell has been mediocre over a stretch of 23 games, and Smith tied that decline to the quarterback situation and the people making the calls.

“[Adofo-Mensah] let Sam Darnold walk out the door and you handed the reins to J.J. McCarthy, who, in fairness, hadn’t even thrown an NFL pass.

We saw him win the national championship at Michigan. He tore his meniscus and was out his rookie year.

Comes back last year, before he throws an NFL pass, you hand him the reins. You cost Justin Jefferson and those boys a year of their career.

That’s what you did. Okay?

So the GM took the heat, but, damnit, I’m looking at the head coach, too.”

Smith didn’t stop there. He broadened the complaint to the ongoing quarterback issues, while making it clear O’Connell isn’t getting a pass.

“You know what, you had Sam Darnold there, you had J.J. McCarthy there, now you got Kyler Murray there and we’re still saying ‘quarterback, quarterback, quarterback is the issue.’

I’m looking at Kevin O’Connell and I’m saying to myself, ‘Where’s the boy wonder at? Where’s the guy that’s supposed to elevate your level of play from the quarterback spot?'”

“He has something to do with that,” Smith added. “He ain’t innocent in all of this.”

The national-media heat on O’Connell may only grow from here if Minnesota’s offense doesn’t find its footing, even with the Vikings still sitting on top of the league standings.

Kyle Van Noy Is Making This A Tough Vikings Decision

Kyle Van Noy has turned a short-term Vikings signing into one of the more interesting roster conversations of the season. Brought in on a one-year deal, the veteran has given Minnesota useful snaps as both a pass rusher and run defender, and his strong play has shown up in the grading as well, with Pro Football Focus giving him high marks for what he has brought to the defense.

Even in a limited role, he has made his presence felt enough to complicate the team's plans for 2027. At about 32 percent of the defensive snaps, Van Noy has done enough to make a case that he should not be treated like a stopgap, and Minnesota now has a decision to make about whether it wants that kind of production around beyond this season. Vikings Undefeated Start Is Hiding A Bigger Offensive Concern

Minnesotas unbeaten start has been built more on the parts of the roster that travel well in January than on any sense that the offense is fully in rhythm. The special teams and defense have carried plenty of the load, and Harrison Smiths 40th career interception was another reminder of how much veteran playmaking still matters to this group. With a tough stretch ahead, the Vikings can enjoy being the NFLs last unbeaten team, but the margin for error looks thinner than the record suggests.

The concern is that the offense still has not matched the standard the rest of the team has set, and the scrutiny is beginning to settle on Kevin OConnells handling of that side of the ball as well as some recent roster decisions. Blake Cashman has been a bright spot in the middle, while Will Fries has yet to settle in after joining the team, leaving Minnesota with a little too much imbalance for a club trying to keep winning at a high level. Jonathan Taylor Just Showed The Vikings What They're Missing

The Vikings spent plenty of the afternoon seeing just how disruptive Jonathan Taylor can be when an offense is built around a true workhorse runner. Taylor was a steady problem for Minnesota, helping Indianapolis stay on schedule and convert third downs in a game that exposed a defense that had usually been better in those situations.

For Minnesota, the reminder is obvious: a back like Taylor changes the feel of a game and gives an offense a different kind of edge. It is easy to see why his fit would be appealing here, even if the reality around any pursuit is more complicated, with no indication the Colts are eager to move him. [Read more 🡒]
