The Harrison Smith situation in Minnesota still doesn’t have a clean ending.
As the Vikings opened training camp, Kevin O’Connell was asked again about the veteran safety’s future, and the answer didn’t move the needle much. Smith remains a free agent, he has not announced his retirement, and the conversations between him and the team are still ongoing.
ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reported O’Connell’s latest update this way: "Kevin O'Connell said he spoke recently with Harrison Smith, who is not signed but has not yet announced his retirement. O'Connell said 'nothing has really changed,' but there was no expectation that it would at this point. Dialogue will continue."
That leaves Minnesota in the same holding pattern it has been in for a while now, waiting to see whether Smith will be back for 2026 or whether this is the point where his run with the Vikings finally ends.
Smith’s resume is already built. Minnesota made him a first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, and he’s been a fixture on the defense ever since.
He has played in 207 games and started 203 of them, piling up 1,180 tackles, 106 pass deflections, 51 tackles for loss, 45 quarterback hits, 39 interceptions, 13 forced fumbles, 10 fumble recoveries and four interceptions returned for touchdowns. He’s also been to six Pro Bowls and earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2017.
Still, the last few seasons have made the question more complicated. Fans have seen Smith’s workload and production trend down, and last year reflected that shift.
He appeared in 15 games but started only two, finishing with a career-low 54 tackles. Even so, he still came away with two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
For now, the Vikings have to prepare for the possibility that Smith isn’t in the lineup. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores will need to keep adjusting, and Minnesota is already looking at options.
Josh Metellus and Theo Jackson are in the mix as potential starters, while rookie third-round pick Jakobe Thomas will compete with Jackson for the job. Metellus, though, is expected to be locked into the lineup this season.
Smith has long been more than just a stat line for this defense. He’s been a steady leader and a key voice in helping the secondary line up correctly in Flores’ system.
The football IQ is still there. The bigger question is whether the body can keep matching it.
And until Smith makes his decision, the Vikings are left waiting - with the possibility still hanging out there that he could simply walk away from the game.
