Christian Darrisaw is headed into Vikings training camp with no restrictions on his surgically repaired left knee, and that’s exactly the kind of news Minnesota needed.
At Tuesday’s press conference, Kevin O’Connell said there are “no physical concerns or limitations” with Darrisaw’s knee, according to The Athletic’s Alec Lewis. After a healthy offseason, the 2021 first-round pick finally appears to have a clean runway back to full strength.
That matters because Darrisaw changes the shape of everything around him. Minnesota spent too much of 2025 juggling protection plans, and a reliable blind-side tackle gives the offense a chance to settle down.
It helps whichever quarterback wins the job between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy this summer, because a steady edge protector lets the passer hold the ball longer for Justin Jefferson’s deeper routes without feeling pressure every time an edge rusher shifts.
Darrisaw’s return also gives O’Connell more freedom in how he calls the offense. When the left edge is secure, tight ends can get out into routes instead of staying home to help, running backs don’t have to spend as much time in chip-block duty, and the coach can spend fewer snaps babysitting protection. That’s a big deal against the NFC North pass rushers that have a way of spoiling promising drives.
He also brings more than pass protection. Darrisaw can set the tone for the run game, and at 315 pounds his movement can help widen the front side of an outside zone run while opening cutback lanes. That kind of balance matters for an offense trying to keep its quarterback upright and composed.
The timing is notable, too. O’Connell and Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley spoke to reporters on Tuesday, the same day Darrisaw and the rest of Minnesota’s veteran players reported to the team facility. Darrisaw tore ligaments in his left knee in October 2024, returned for 10 starts last season, then landed on injured reserve in December after lingering issues.
The next real checkpoint comes in camp. The first practice open to fans is Saturday, August 1, and that’s when Darrisaw’s workload and movement will be easier to judge.
For now, the update is encouraging. But the real test will be how the knee holds up once the pads come on, the contact starts, and the reps pile up.
