The Vikings may have bigger-picture goals in mind, but Sunday in New Orleans still comes down to one familiar question: can Justin Jefferson go?
Minnesota heads to face the Saints in Week 6 with a chance to reach its bye week 5-0, while New Orleans is trying to avoid sliding to 1-4. That backdrop matters, but the biggest storyline for the Vikings is whether their top receiver - and St. Rose, LA native - will be ready to suit up.
Jefferson has been working back from the ankle injury he suffered early in Week 3 against the Buccaneers. He missed all of Week 4, so any return to practice is a real step forward, even if it doesn’t lock in his availability for Sunday.
There’s reason for optimism, though. Jefferson wanted to get back into that game against Tampa Bay after the injury first hit, standing on the sideline with his helmet on after time in the blue medical tent. He later went to the locker room for more testing, and that’s when it was determined he had sprained his left ankle.
Minnesota handled the situation cautiously the following week, keeping him out of practice and out of last Sunday’s game against the Dolphins. But his limited work to open this week suggests progress, and that’s a good sign for a receiver the Vikings badly want back in the mix.
The biggest point here is simple: if there were major worries about the ankle, Jefferson probably wouldn’t be practicing at all, even in a limited capacity. After practice, the 27-year-old said the ankle “feels good now” and that he hopes to “rock and roll” on Sunday.
That matters even more because the Vikings’ passing game has not exactly been humming early in the 2026 season. Jefferson has logged fewer than 20 total snaps with new starting quarterback Kyler Murray, with both players having already left games because of injuries.
Minnesota could also use more certainty around the rest of its receiving group. Jordan Addison sat out Wednesday’s practice with a hamstring injury, though he appears likely to play Sunday.
Still, there’s no guarantee he’s at full strength. Jauan Jennings sits next on the depth chart, but he has not given the Vikings much to lean on so far, with only two catches for nine yards in three games.
Getting Jefferson back would change the shape of the passing attack. He opens things up for everyone around him, and without him the options are far more limited. That becomes even more important when you look at what’s coming next for Minnesota.
After the Saints, the Vikings go into their bye and then host the Colts. After that, the schedule tightens fast: the Lions twice, the Bills, Packers, 49ers, Falcons, Panthers and Patriots all show up between Nov. 1 and Dec. 20.
If Minnesota wants its offense to hit top gear, Jefferson and Murray need as many reps together as they can get before that run begins. The Vikings are a strong team, but they’ll need their offense synced up if they want to be taken seriously as contenders.
If Jefferson gets the green light, it’s hard to imagine many things keeping him off the field Sunday - especially with his hometown crowd waiting in New Orleans.

Vikings Injury Report Puts Several Key Starters In Doubt For Sunday
The first injury reports of the week gave the Vikings an early look at just how much juggling may be required before Sundays game at Caesars Superdome. Minnesota and New Orleans both released their initial availability lists, and the Vikings side includes some familiar names near the top, with Justin Jefferson and Christian Darrisaw among the players worth monitoring as the week unfolds.
For Kevin OConnells staff, the bigger issue is less about one isolated absence than the overall practice picture this early in the preparation cycle. The Saints report brings its own concerns, with Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave also on it, which only adds to the uncertainty on both sides heading into the weekend. The next few practices will tell the real story, but for now Minnesota is dealing with a report that already has several starters in doubt. [Read more 🡒]
Vikings Still Have One Clear Path Even After Murray's Shaky Start
The early NFC quarterback picture already has a few familiar names under a microscope, and Kyler Murray is right there among them after a shaky start to the 2026 season. He is still viewed as a quarterback with enough talent to settle in as the year unfolds, but the opening stretch has left plenty of room for skepticism as the league starts sorting out which passers can carry their teams through the long middle of the schedule.
For Minnesota, that matters because the Vikings are watching the conference landscape with the same practical lens they use on everything else: which path still looks open, and which one is already closing. Jalon Daniels, meanwhile, is dealing with a far different early assignment as a rookie pressed into action because of injury, adding another layer of uncertainty to a quarterback group that is already hard to read. The upside for the Vikings is that the NFC still feels fluid, but the challenge is finding a route that remains clear once the season starts separating hopeful starts from real momentum. Odell Beckham Jr. Gives Undefeated Vikings Needed Help Fast
A quick phone call from Kevin OConnell helped push Odell Beckham Jr. toward Minnesota, and the move gives the undefeated Vikings a jolt they clearly needed. Beckham arrives with a rsum that still carries weight around the league, including Pro Bowl recognition and a Super Bowl title, and his familiarity with OConnell from the Rams' championship run made the fit easier to see from the start.
The timing matters even more because Minnesota has struggled badly through the air, sitting last in passing yards. Beckham also lands in a receiver room with a familiar face in Justin Jefferson, giving the Vikings another established target as they try to stabilize an offense that has not yet found its rhythm. Whether the addition can lift the passing game quickly is the question now hanging over a team that has kept winning anyway. [Read more 🡒]
