Justin Jefferson’s afternoon against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took a sharp turn in the opening quarter Sunday, when the Vikings star wide receiver was forced out with an ankle injury.
Minnesota had already gotten on the board early, but the mood changed quickly once Jefferson was spotted on the sideline during a Vikings offensive series. He later headed into the blue medical tent, and the team listed him as questionable to return because of the ankle issue.
Jefferson stayed on the sideline in the first half with his helmet on, a sign that suggested a possible return. That hope faded in the second quarter, when he went to the locker room with the training staff for a closer look at the injury.
By 5:10 p.m. CST, the Vikings had officially ruled Jefferson out midway through the third quarter. The severity of the injury remains unknown.
With Jefferson unavailable, Jordan Addison gave Minnesota a much-needed lift. The Vikings answered with a four-play, 73-yard scoring drive in the second quarter, capped by a 41-yard touchdown from Kyler Murray to Addison. It was Addison’s first touchdown of the season and Murray’s first in a Minnesota uniform.
How long Jefferson is sidelined will matter a lot for the Vikings, because that Murray-to-Addison connection may need to keep carrying some of the load if Jefferson misses time.
Jefferson’s injury history offers some reason for optimism, at least on the availability front. He has not missed a game because of injury since the 2023 season, when hamstring and chest problems kept him out for seven games.
He also spent most of Minnesota’s 2025 training camp dealing with a hamstring injury, though that did not cost him any regular-season time.
The last time Jefferson dealt with an ankle injury was in 2021, and he did not miss any games then.
