Justin Jefferson Absence Would Test The Vikings At The Worst Time

Vikings fans await updates on Justin Jefferson's ankle injury as Sunday's matchup against the Miami Dolphins approaches.

The Minnesota Vikings may have to navigate Sunday’s matchup with the Miami Dolphins without Justin Jefferson.

Jefferson did not practice Wednesday at TCO Performance Center and is day-to-day after suffering an ankle injury in last Sunday’s 23-16 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He caught two passes for 33 yards on the opening series, then left the game and did not return.

Coach Kevin O’Connell said Jefferson has avoided a long-term injury, but his availability for Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium remains uncertain.

"He’s feeling a little bit better, but not in any place right now to talk about what that means for the weekend. I know we were encouraged about what it actually is, now it’s just about working through it," O’Connell said. "We’ll try to get him to a place where he can go."

Jefferson has not missed extended time since the 2023 season, when he was placed on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury.

If he can’t go, O’Connell said the rest of the offense has to be ready to pick up the slack. Jordan Addison already showed what that can look like against Tampa Bay, finishing with five catches for 90 yards and a 41-yard touchdown.

"It starts with me making sure our entire group knows that you have your gameday roster and everybody’s gotta be ready to contribute in a moment’s notice. We’ll be prepared this weekend for whatever takes place with Justin," O’Connell said. "If we have him, if we don’t it was a good learning lesson for everybody involved, including the guys that we have a lot of confidence in to step in and make some plays."

The Vikings enter the weekend 3-0 and have built that start largely on defense and special teams. The offense still has questions to answer, and Kyler Murray has not provided the kind of explosion the Vikings hoped for when they signed him in the offseason.

Minnesota managed just 230 total yards against Tampa Bay and had 246 yards with Carson Wentz against the Bears.

"The little things that I could get into are what’s causing some massive chances not being had in the game that change the whole outlook of how you look at the performance," O’Connell said. "Doesn’t mean we’re not capable of it, but until we stop having those one-offs here and there by everybody, we’ve got to continue to coach our way towards these guys having total clarity, and then we see it in the game. I think we’re going to like what we see."

Vikings Just Lost Another Depth Piece To A Desperate Giants Team

The Giants turned to familiar help along their defensive front, signing Jihad Ward off the Vikings practice squad to their active roster after Brian Burns went down with a torn ACL. Ward had already spent time in New York during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, so the move gives the Giants an immediate option they know well as they try to patch together the edge-rush group.

For Minnesota, it is another reminder of how thin depth can get in a hurry when other teams are hunting for experienced bodies. Ward had been sitting on the Vikings practice squad, but New York needed a quick fix and made room by releasing Josh Tupou, leaving Minnesota to absorb one more roster loss while the market around a damaged Giants defense keeps shifting. Vikings Finally Explained The J.J. McCarthy Trade Fans Feared

When the Vikings sent J.J. McCarthy to the Giants, it immediately landed as the kind of move that can rattle a fan base, especially with a player whose future had been tied so closely to the teams long-term plans. General manager Nolan Teasley later laid out the reasoning behind the deal, and the key point was simple enough: this was not a trade McCarthy asked for, even if the optics made it easy for supporters to assume otherwise.

Kevin OConnells reaction added another layer to the story, because the head coach described an emotional exchange with McCarthy after the announcement. For Minnesota, the explanation matters as much as the transaction itself, since any departure involving a high-profile young quarterback is going to invite questions about timing, trust and whether the organization sees the move as a football decision or something more complicated. Giants Plan For J.J. McCarthy Says Plenty About Vikings Trade

The Giants reported plan for J.J. McCarthy is a revealing one for the Vikings as much as it is for New York. Minnesota moved on from the quarterback in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick, and the direction the Giants are taking with him suggests they see a player whose best early fit is in a run-heavy setup rather than as the centerpiece of a high-volume passing game.

For Vikings fans, that naturally brings the trade back into focus. McCarthys college success came in a system that did not ask him to carry much of the passing load, and his time in Minnesota showed how difficult that transition could be when the offense asked for more. If the Giants are already shaping their offense around those concerns, it only sharpens the question of what the Vikings believed they had, and why they were willing to move on when they did.
