That Harbaugh connection is the real hook. McCarthy and Harbaugh won a national championship together in early 2024, and a reunion would put the quarterback back in a system he knows well. Harbaugh understands McCarthy’s strengths and limitations better than most, and the idea is that a return to that environment could help him rebuild confidence and sharpen his game.
Minnesota’s side of the story is less dramatic, at least for now. McCarthy’s 2025 season did not live up to the expectations that came with his 2024 first-round selection.
Injuries and uneven play gave Murray the opening he needed, and the veteran took advantage during training camp. Kevin O’Connell has said McCarthy will stay in the backup role and continue getting meaningful practice reps, while the organization still sees a future for him in purple.
