As the Giants head into Sunday’s Week 5 game against the Washington Commanders, JJ McCarthy is drawing positive reviews inside the building - even if his role still isn’t fully settled.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said Thursday that McCarthy has handled the transition into New York’s offense at a high level since arriving from the Minnesota Vikings in a trade on September 28. The quarterback has yet to play for the Giants, but Nagy sounded encouraged by how quickly he has picked things up.
“I would say it's an A-plus,” said Nagy. “He's doing really well. That's as best as I can put it.”
Nagy said McCarthy’s growth over the last seven days has come from both sides of the process: the staff putting in the work and the quarterback attacking the playbook. Quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan and offensive quality control coach Mike Snyder have been helping McCarthy and Jake Haener get ready for whatever comes next.
Even with that progress, Nagy made it clear this is still a work in progress. The staff is trying to identify the plays that fit McCarthy best while also making sure he and Haener know the full game plan. That means it’s more than just building a small package for one quarterback.
The Giants actually had plays ready for McCarthy in their previous game, but none of them ended up being used. Nagy also stopped short of saying when McCarthy might take on a bigger role or whether he’ll move ahead of Haener on the depth chart.
Head coach John Harbaugh said Monday that McCarthy could be elevated to the backup job for Sunday’s game. If that happens, he would sit behind starter Jameis Winston, though the team has not confirmed any change.
For now, Haener is still preparing right alongside McCarthy, waiting to see how the quarterback situation develops. McCarthy’s trajectory is moving in the right direction, but the final call on his role will come down to how ready the staff believes he is.

Justin Jefferson Just Gave Vikings Fans A Reason For Hope
Justin Jefferson has been doing more than watching Minnesotas season from the sideline while he works back from the ankle sprain he suffered on Sept. 27. The Vikings receiver recently hosted a Strike Out Cancer bowling event that raised more than $45,000 for the American Cancer Society, and the night carried extra meaning with Jefferson making a personal gesture for a young cancer survivor by gifting two Super Bowl tickets.
It was the kind of off-field effort that keeps Jeffersons profile high even as he eases through limited practice and the Vikings get ready for their next game. The event also earned him Week 5 NFLPA Community MVP honors, a reminder that even while his on-field return remains a work in progress, he is still giving Minnesota plenty to feel good about. Stefon Diggs' Latest Setback Just Added To Washington's Week 5 Trouble
Washingtons Week 5 outlook took another hit Friday when the Commanders officially ruled out six players for Sundays game against the Giants, including quarterback Marcus Mariota and wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Mariotas absence is especially notable because he was already dealing with a knee issue that is expected to keep him out for 2-3 weeks, leaving Washington to navigate the injury the same way it handled his preseason setback.
Stefon Diggs being unavailable only adds to the sense of a lineup getting thinned out at the wrong time, with the Commanders already trying to sort through multiple absences on both sides of the ball. For a team heading into a divisional game with limited margin for error, the bigger question now is how long this patchwork approach can hold up before the missing pieces start to show in the standings. Vikings Unbeaten Start Faces A Saints Test Fans Wont Ignore
With Minnesota unbeaten heading into Week 5, the matchup with New Orleans has become one of those early-season games that feels bigger than the standings suggest. Suit Williams, appearing on The Real Forno Show, dug into why the Saints could have a hard time finding rhythm against Brian Flores defense and why this game may turn into more of a grind than a showcase. He also weighed in on Tyler Shoughs play, adding another layer to a game already drawing plenty of attention from Vikings fans.
The quarterback conversation is where the debate gets especially interesting for Minnesota. Williams addressed the Vikings situation with Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, a topic that has naturally become part of the larger Week 5 conversation around the team. He saw this one staying tight and ultimately leaned toward New Orleans, making it clear that the Saints are not coming in as just a backdrop for Minnesotas unbeaten start. [Read more 🡒]
