Jalen Redmonds Breakout Just Created A Vikings Roster Dilemma

Jalen Redmond's impressive performance is creating a financial puzzle for the Vikings as they balance talent retention with salary cap constraints.

The Vikings thought they had mapped out the future of their defensive line this offseason. They let veterans Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave walk, then used a first-round pick on Caleb Banks and a third-round pick on Domonique Orange in the 2026 NFL Draft to plug the holes.

Jalen Redmond has complicated that plan in the best possible way.

The 27-year-old defensive lineman, now in his third NFL season, has turned a growing role into a real breakout. His snap counts have climbed every year, and through Minnesota’s first five games he has delivered a Pro Football Focus grade of 76.6, along with nine quarterback pressures, 15 combined tackles, two pass deflections, and one forced fumble in 236 defensive snaps.

That kind of production usually solves a problem. In this case, it creates one.

Redmond is a restricted free agent after the season, which means his next contract could jump into serious territory. Based on deals for players such as Broncos defensive tackle D.J. Jones and the Colts’ Grover Stewart, his market could land around $15 million per year.

That figure may not sound overwhelming in the NFL’s financial landscape, but Minnesota has plenty of other business to handle. The Vikings are expected to have about $35 million in cap space next season, and they already have a long list of players to think about, including Andrew Van Ginklel, T.J. Hockenson, Blake Cashman, Isaiah Rodgers, and more.

Rob Brzezinski remains in the front office, so the Vikings still have their salary-cap specialist working the board. Even so, keeping Redmond may not be simple.

What makes the situation tricky is that Minnesota probably wants to keep him. He’s young, he’s productive, and he’s become a real force on the interior.

PFF currently has him graded as the top defensive tackle against the run in the NFL. Pairing him with Banks and Orange would give the Vikings a strong path forward on the defensive line.

The fit makes sense. The finances might not. And that’s where the interesting conundrum now sits for Minnesota.

Blake Cashman Is Becoming A Much Bigger Vikings Story Than Expected

The Vikings 5-0 start has been fueled in part by a defense that keeps finding new ways to make life difficult for opposing quarterbacks, and Blake Cashman has quickly become one of the more interesting pieces in Brian Flores scheme. The linebacker has already shown he can affect the passer, bringing quickness and timing that have made him a steady presence in a front that has spent the opening month setting the tone for Minnesota.

Cashmans production has also started to push the conversation beyond his role as a reliable defender and into bigger expectations for the rest of the season. If he keeps generating pressure at this pace, he could wind up with a far more noticeable sack total than anyone might have expected in September, which would only add to a defense that has helped make the Vikings one of the early surprises of the league. Vikings' Undefeated Start Just Made One Trade Debate Impossible To Ignore

An undefeated start has a way of changing the conversation around a roster, and Minnesotas 5-0 run has only made the question of what comes next louder. The Vikings have held their ground despite some offensive issues and a few concerns about defensive depth, which is why any discussion about adding help is now being viewed through a playoff lens rather than a survival one.

Bleacher Report recently pointed to Khalil Mack as a possible fit, with the Chargers off to a rough start and the veteran edge rusher still performing at a high level. For Minnesota, the appeal is obvious: a proven pass rusher would add another layer to a defense trying to stay ahead of the curve, even if no deal is in place and any move would have to make sense for a team that has given itself plenty of reasons to think big. Vikings Bye Week Could Put One Intriguing Backfield Option In Focus

The Vikings Week 6 bye comes at a useful time, giving Minnesota a chance to take stock while the rest of the schedule keeps moving around it. The immediate focus is the Titans-Colts game, which matters in part because Indianapolis is next on the calendar for Minnesota and former Vikings quarterback Daniel Jones is now starting there, adding another layer to a matchup the Vikings will be watching closely.

The extra intrigue, though, is whether the trade deadline could eventually pull Minnesota into the market for help at running back. Tennessee has struggled as a team, but one back there has produced solid individual numbers, and that kind of profile can start to look awfully tempting for a team thinking beyond the bye week and into the stretch run.
