The Minnesota Vikings have made their call at quarterback, and it leaves J.J. McCarthy in a messy spot.
Minnesota settled its training camp battle on Tuesday by naming veteran Kyler Murray the starter, a move that came nearly a month before the regular season. Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings’ coaching staff clearly didn’t feel the need to drag this out.
That decision naturally shifts the spotlight to McCarthy. For now, every path seems to be in play, even if NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport sounded doubtful that Minnesota would actually pull the trigger on a trade.
“I think there's a lot of questions about what happens with J.J. McCarthy now,” Rapoport posted on social media. “I don't know if the Vikings would trade him.”
If the Vikings do decide to move him, or if McCarthy pushes for a change of scenery, three destinations stand out as the cleanest fit.
The Jets make sense first because New York has already spent this era sorting through quarterbacks. Aaron Glenn’s group has gone through Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook during the 2025 season, and the roster looks almost completely remade. They traded for Geno Smith to be the expected starter, then drafted Cade Klubnik to compete with Cook and Bailey Zappe in camp.
McCarthy could bring more upside than any of that group. He might also be better than Klubnik, Cook, and Zappe right now, which would make him a strong backup option behind Smith in 2026. The issue is whether that role is attractive enough for McCarthy, especially with three first-round picks sitting ahead of a loaded 2027 quarterback class.
Cleveland is another logical name, even if the fit is complicated. The Browns already have Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders battling for the starting job, and McCarthy would be walking into another crowded room.
If the price is manageable, they could at least kick the tires and see whether he flashes anything. But there’s also a clear reason for hesitation: the Browns are likely to chase a quarterback early in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft, and they could even come away with a top name like Arch Manning or Dante Moore.
That makes it fair to question why they’d spend assets on another quarterback who would probably be on the bench again next offseason anyway. Still, this is the Browns.
Then there’s the Chargers, and that’s the one that jumps out immediately.
Jim Harbaugh knows McCarthy well from their time together at Michigan, where they won a national championship. Harbaugh has already made his admiration clear, once calling McCarthy’s pro day workout “the best throwing day [he's] ever seen.”
A reunion in Los Angeles would not just be about the history, though. Justin Herbert gives the Chargers an established starter who wouldn’t be pushed by McCarthy, which would allow McCarthy to sit, learn, and develop behind a proven NFL quarterback. He’d also continue working under Harbaugh, who has his own background as an NFL quarterback.
For the Chargers, McCarthy could be a meaningful upgrade at QB2 over Trey Lance or DJ Uiagalelei. And for McCarthy, the familiarity with Harbaugh may make Los Angeles the most appealing landing spot of the three.
