J.J. McCarthy Is Reviving A Vikings What-If In New York

With J.J. McCarthy's impressive debut as starter, the New York Giants face a looming quarterback conundrum that could redefine their future.

J.J. McCarthy’s first Giants start may have done more than steady New York’s quarterback room for the moment. It may have cracked open a real conversation about what the franchise looks like at the position in 2027 and beyond.

That’s the kind of possibility Giants general manager Joe Schoen was hinting at after McCarthy’s Week 7 debut.

“To have, you know, the two young guys with Jaxson [Dart] and J.J., both talented players, it's a good position to be in.," Schoen said when speaking about the Giants current QB situation.

For now, McCarthy is the immediate answer after the Giants acquired him in a trade following Jaxon Dart’s season-ending injury. But the move could end up giving New York something more than a stopgap. If McCarthy keeps stacking strong performances, the Giants suddenly have two young quarterbacks who could both push for the future.

McCarthy arrived in the league as part of the 2024 quarterback class that included Caleb Williams and Drake Maye, but he was the player who stirred the most debate. Some teams, including the Giants, saw a top-10 talent after he led Michigan to the national championship. Others waited to see whether the game would catch up to the résumé.

Minnesota took him with the No. 10 overall pick, betting that Kevin O’Connell could bring out the best in him. Instead, McCarthy’s first two years were a stop-start ordeal. He missed his entire rookie season with a torn meniscus, then returned to start 10 games in 2025 before injuries again interrupted his season and kept him from finding any real rhythm.

The problems didn’t stop there. McCarthy had trouble adjusting to O’Connell’s passing attack, and his uneven play only deepened the questions surrounding Minnesota’s quarterback situation heading into 2026.

With Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz ahead of him on the depth chart, his path in Minnesota grew even murkier. Eventually, the Vikings moved on and sent him to the Giants for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick.

His first game in New York looked like a fresh start. Against the Houston Texans, McCarthy delivered the kind of outing that reminded people why he went in the first round in the first place. In the Giants’ 27-21 overtime win, he went 20 of 28 for 252 yards with a 99.1 passer rating.

He didn’t force the issue. He played within the offense, made smart throws and leaned on a strong rushing attack.

McCarthy completed five passes of at least 20 yards, including a 47-yard strike to rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields. Against a tough Texans defense, he also showed toughness, command and the leadership that had made him such an appealing prospect coming out of Michigan.

That matters because the Giants are sitting at 4-2-1 and leading the NFC East. McCarthy’s arrival gives them a new layer at the most important position on the field, and it comes at a time when Dart was already being viewed as the quarterback of the present and future before his injury changed the picture.

The Giants also got solid work from Jameis Winston after Dart went down, as he helped keep the team in the division race with two wins and a tie before McCarthy took over. That stretch helped bridge the gap, but it also set up this next phase.

One strong start won’t turn the depth chart upside down by itself. McCarthy would need a run of quality play before anyone could seriously talk about Dart looking over his shoulder. Still, the possibility is obvious: if McCarthy keeps playing like the quarterback Minnesota thought it drafted, the Giants could walk into 2027 with two first-round quarterbacks and a genuine decision to make.

That could lead to a training camp battle. It could also make McCarthy a trade piece if his production continues to climb and other quarterback-needy teams decide he looks like a starter again.

For New York, the most interesting part may be that McCarthy does not have to win the job outright to change the conversation. He only needs to keep proving he belongs in the league’s long-term plans. If he does that, the Giants won’t just have a good problem.

They’ll have one of the NFL’s most unusual quarterback questions heading into 2027.

Vikings May Have Found The Easiest Way To Settle Kyler Murray

Kyler Murray has had four full games to settle into the Vikings offense, and the results have been uneven enough that Minnesota still looks like a team searching for the cleanest path to rhythm. The next chance comes against Detroit, a defense that has had its share of trouble this season, and the matchup points toward a place Minnesota can lean on without overcomplicating things.

T.J. Hockenson stands out as the obvious pressure valve in that plan. The Lions have been vulnerable in the middle of the field, which gives the Vikings a chance to keep Murray on schedule and let the tight end do the heavy lifting in the passing game. If Minnesota wants a simpler way to steady the offense, this looks like the kind of opponent that can make that approach work. [Read more 🡒]

Vikings Could Make One Offensive Move Fans Won't Stop Debating

With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the Vikings are at least doing their homework on offense. NFL insider James Palmer reported that general manager Nolan Teasley has been actively exploring trade options, with running back and tight end among the positions Minnesota is monitoring as it tries to sort through a stretch of injuries and keep the roster balanced.

The running back chatter is the part that will keep fans talking, especially with Minnesota already connected to Jonathan Taylor as a possible target. The Vikings also have multiple draft picks to work with, which gives them some flexibility if they decide to make a move, but for now the bigger question is how aggressive they want to be before the deadline passes. Vikings Running Back Need Just Put Jonathan Taylor Back In Play

Jonathan Taylors name has already been floating around the league as the Colts continue reshaping their roster, and the latest chatter only adds to the uncertainty. His wife, Ayanna Taylor, drew attention with videos expressing concern about Indianapolis changes after a series of trades, while Taylor himself has said he is aware of the rumors without spending much time on them and has backed her right to speak openly.

For Minnesota, the timing is hard to ignore. Reports have linked the Vikings to a possible pursuit of Taylor, and the teams interest at running back is no secret as it looks for ways to stay active in that market. Whether the conversation turns into something more concrete remains to be seen, but Taylors situation is one worth watching closely from a Vikings perspective. [Read more 🡒]
