J.J. McCarthy is turning Minnesota’s quarterback battle into something real.
What started as a presumed Kyler Murray path to the Vikings’ Week 1 job in 2026 now looks a lot less settled, with McCarthy making an early push in training camp. Murray arrived as the favorite, but McCarthy’s comfort in Kevin O’Connell’s system and his strong start have kept this from feeling like a formality.
The numbers from the first two days of camp back that up. Per @jzulgad, Murray went 16/22 in 11-on-11 work and 4/12 in 7-on-7 over 47 snaps, while McCarthy finished 13/16 in 11-on-11 and 10/12 in 7-on-7 across 38 snaps. Day 3 was a walkthrough.
That edge for McCarthy makes sense when you look at the bigger picture. He has spent two seasons learning O’Connell’s offense, developing timing with Justin Jefferson and the rest of the receiving group, and getting used to NFL-speed coverage reads. Murray, meanwhile, is still building his command of the playbook and syncing up with new teammates, and that adjustment has shown up in camp.
ESPN analyst Benjamin Solak said that “McCarthy appears to be performing better simply because he has experience with this offense,” and added that Murray will need “a few weeks” to catch up. That matters because if McCarthy keeps stacking solid practices and carries that over into preseason work, the Vikings may have no choice but to leave the door open longer than expected.
The Vikings’ view of McCarthy has also been shaped by what they saw last year. His mechanics, consistency under pressure, and occasional decision-making issues were all seen as fixable with coaching and reps. O’Connell has pointed this offseason to improved footwork, anticipation, and ball placement.
Murray’s concerns are a different kind of problem. Durability, consistency over a full season, and the ability to sustain high-level play for 17 games have all followed him in recent years. If McCarthy keeps showing cleaner mechanics and quicker reads, the case for him as the safer long-term option gets stronger.
Minnesota has made clear this is an open competition. O’Connell has said both quarterbacks will work with the first and second teams, with no promise of an even split but a definite plan to evaluate both.
McCarthy hasn’t shied away from the moment either. He said he’s “100%” confident he can win the job, and Adam Thielen echoed the idea that the door is open, saying, “if J.J. McCarthy comes in and shows what he wasn’t doing well last year, he could win that job.”
For McCarthy to keep this thing moving in his direction, he has to keep the operation clean: accurate throws, better mechanics under pressure, quicker processing, stronger chemistry with Jefferson and the rest of the skill talent, and durability through camp and preseason. If he does that while Murray is still settling in, this could stay close all the way into late August - and McCarthy could end up winning it.
