J.J. McCarthy Injury Report Just Deepened The Vikings Quarterback Uncertainty

Adam Schefter's latest insight suggests significant implications for the Vikings' quarterback situation as J.J. McCarthy's status remains shrouded in uncertainty.

Adam Schefter threw another log on the fire around J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings on Monday, and this one only made the whole situation messier.

McCarthy’s ankle injury, which he picked up in the second preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens, was initially presented as something minor. McCarthy himself acted like it was no big deal, and head coach Kevin O'Connell said that if he was able to go, the quarterback could start in the preseason finale against the Denver Broncos.

That never happened. Before the game, reports came out that McCarthy would not play against Denver. Some of those reports said he was not comfortable enough to take the field, while also reinforcing that the injury was not thought to be serious.

From there, the speculation started to pile up. Was Minnesota trying to trade him and simply holding him out? Was McCarthy unwilling to play in the final preseason game because he knew his future with the team was already shaky no matter what happened on the field?

However you slice it, his absence in the finale only widened the tension. If the Vikings believed he could play and wanted him to, but he declined, then the split between the two sides looks even more real.

Then Schefter added a new wrinkle during Monday’s edition of "The Pat McAfee Show", where he discussed the Vikings being one of the teams that kept four quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster.

Alec Lewis of The Athletic pushed back a bit on X, citing his sources and pointing out the gap between the two versions of the injury.

"J.J. McCarthy's injury was described as "minor" and "day to day" by several sources Friday. But @AdamSchefter is reporting here that it is a "multi-week" injury."

That’s where the source game matters. Schefter often ends up sounding like a mouthpiece for agents when it comes to transactions, so his information here likely comes from McCarthy’s camp.

Beat writers around the team, on the other hand, are usually working off sources inside the organization. Neither side is automatically wrong; they’re just coming at it from different places.

It also doesn’t hurt to note that Schefter is a University of Michigan alum, just like McCarthy.

If Schefter is right and McCarthy is dealing with a multi-week ankle injury, a short-term move to injured reserve would make sense. The timing would be everything.

If Minnesota had placed him there before roster cuts were finalized, he would have been out for the season. Doing it afterward would keep the possibility of a return alive later in the year.

And if the injury is only going to keep him out for a few weeks, the idea of a trade still sits out there. Any team that made a deal would be doing so without having seen him since that second preseason game, but the option would exist.

For now, Schefter’s report cuts against everything that had been said before. More than anything, it’s the latest sign that the Vikings and McCarthy are in a relationship that looks finished, even if it hasn’t been made official yet.

Vikings Already Reworking Their Roster As More Moves Loom

The Vikings trimmed down to their initial 53-man roster, then immediately started reshaping it by claiming two offensive linemen off waivers and clearing room with another round of cuts. Quarterback Max Brosmer and wide receiver Dillon Bell were both on the first version of the final roster, only to be waived shortly after as Minnesota continued to adjust the back end of the roster.

Brosmer and Bell could still circle back to the organization if they clear waivers and land on the practice squad, but for now their status reflects just how unsettled things remain in Minnesota. With the opener approaching, the Vikings still appear to have more sorting to do, and this latest shuffle suggests the roster picture may not settle for a while yet. [Read more 🡒]

Vikings Practice Squad Is Taking Shape With One Decision Still Looming

The Vikings practice squad is starting to come into focus after the team filled most of the spots with familiar names from training camp. Fifteen players landed on the unit, giving Minnesota a group that already knows the system and has spent much of the summer around the building. Among the players on the list are DaVeawn Armstead, Michael Briscoe and Jack Nelson, along with several others who were part of the teams recent camp work.

One decision still hangs over the group, though, and it could shape the final look of the squad. Minnesota waived quarterback Max Brosmer and wide receiver Dillon Bell to make room for new waiver claims, and both could still circle back as the Vikings sort through the last bit of roster business. For a team that likes continuity on the back end of the roster, the final choice will say plenty about which developmental pieces the Vikings want closest at hand. [Read more 🡒]

Vikings Final Cuts Just Changed Everything For These Fringe Survivors

The Vikings first 53-man roster of the 2026 season brought some clarity, and it also gave a handful of fringe players a real foothold as the team moved through cut-down day. Among the names still standing are punter Brett Thorson, halfback Demond Claiborne, offensive lineman Caleb Tiernan and edge rusher Chaz Chambliss, each of whom did enough in the preseason to stay in the conversation as Minnesota sorted out the back end of the roster.

For players in that group, surviving the initial cuts is only part of the battle, because the roster remains fluid before the regular season begins. But the fact that Minnesota kept them around says plenty about how the staff viewed their camp work and how each might fit if the Vikings need depth, special teams help or a surprise contributor once the games start to count.
