Kyle Sloter says his time with the Vikings came with a message he never expected: dial it back.
On The Victory Degree podcast, the former Minnesota quarterback said he was told to shrink his game during the preseason, not elevate it. Sloter spent years working for chances in the NFL, USFL, and XFL, and Minnesota gave him one of his biggest looks. He appeared in eight preseason games for the Vikings across 2018 and 2019 before the team waived him after the 2019 preseason.
According to Sloter, the instruction from the staff was blunt. “I was told, when I was at the Vikings at one point, that I needed to do less,” Sloter said. “That I needed to go out there and be worse in the preseason.”
He said he believes the reasoning behind that kind of message is simple: teams do not want a backup quarterback creating pressure for the starter. “They don’t want competition between a backup quarterback and a starter,” he said.
“Don’t want any controversy. They don’t want those things.”
Sloter also pointed to the money side of the equation. “Especially when you have a lot of guaranteed money on a guy that is going to play, no matter what.”
He did not name the player he was referring to, though Heavy suggested he may have meant Kirk Cousins, who was with Minnesota at the time. Cousins had signed the first fully guaranteed contract in NFL history, worth $84 million over three years. That link, however, remains an inference from the outlet and was not confirmed by Sloter.
Sloter said he rejected that approach entirely. “You have to play like a backup, and it just was never me,” he said. “It was never me to not go out there and compete.”
Minnesota’s quarterback picture looks very different now. The team’s depth chart has changed plenty since Sloter’s stint, and even J.J. McCarthy has moved on after the Vikings traded him to the Giants this season.

Vikings Ground Game Problem Is Fueling A Risky Saquon Debate
The Vikings have spent this season trying to lean more on the run, but the extra carries have not translated into the kind of efficiency they were hoping for. Minnesotas ground game remains a problem, and that has naturally pushed the conversation toward bigger solutions, including whether the front office should look outside the building before the trade deadline.
Saquon Barkley has emerged as the name getting the most attention, which says plenty about how urgent the discussion has become. Still, any move of that size would run against the way Minnesota usually builds its roster, and the practical hurdles are real enough to make this feel more like a debate than a deal in waiting. Justin Jefferson Just Gave Vikings Fans A Reason For Hope
Justin Jeffersons latest spotlight came away from the field, where he turned a bowling event into a meaningful fundraiser for a cause far bigger than football. His Strike Out Cancer gathering raised more than $45,000 for the American Cancer Society, and the day carried an especially personal touch when Jefferson gave two Super Bowl tickets to a young cancer survivor.
For Vikings fans watching his return from the ankle sprain he suffered on September 27, the off-field update offered a reminder of how much Jefferson brings even while he works his way back. He has been limited in practice as Minnesota gears up for its next game, so the hope now is that the same player making an impact in the community can soon start giving the offense a lift again. Vikings Unbeaten Start Faces A Saints Test Fans Wont Ignore
With Minnesotas unbeaten start drawing more attention by the week, the Week 5 matchup with New Orleans has started to look like more than just another early-season checkpoint. On The Real Forno Show, Suit Williams dug into why this one has a different feel, especially with Brian Flores defense set to challenge a Saints offense still trying to find its footing and get comfortable against pressure.
The quarterback conversation is just as interesting from a Vikings angle, with Tyler Shough drawing plenty of notice and Minnesotas own situation adding another layer to the matchup. Williams came away believing this game will be tight and, for fans already circling every test of the Vikings start, he did not shy away from leaning toward New Orleans in the end. [Read more 🡒]
