Christian Wilkins, a name that's been floating around the Minnesota Vikings' radar for a while, is back in the conversation. According to the ever-reliable Adam Schefter, Wilkins is on the mend from a foot injury and gearing up for a 2026 return. With whispers of interest from 26 teams, it's a safe bet the Vikings might be among them, especially given Wilkins' history with head coach Brian Flores.
Wilkins, Flores' first draft pick when he was at the helm of the Miami Dolphins, was selected 13th overall in 2019. The Vikings could certainly use a boost on the interior line, and Wilkins fits that bill. But while the connection is intriguing, there are a few caution flags waving.
In Week 5 of 2024, Wilkins' season came to an abrupt halt with a foot injury. The Raiders, who'd signed him to a hefty $110 million deal, released him in 2025.
It was a quick end to what was supposed to be a dynamic pairing with Maxx Crosby. The fallout from that injury included a contentious attempt by the Raiders to void $35.2 million in guaranteed money, citing disagreements over surgery decisions.
Adding to the drama, reports emerged of an incident in Las Vegas where Wilkins allegedly attempted to kiss a teammate, leading to an HR complaint. While this isn't the main reason he's still a free agent, it certainly complicates his marketability.
Despite these hurdles, Wilkins’ on-field performance has been impressive. In 2023, he racked up nine sacks with the Dolphins and was on track for another stellar year with the Raiders before his injury, boasting two sacks in five games and ranking as one of the top run defenders.
Minnesota could have used that kind of production last season, especially after their own free-agent signings fell short. The Vikings ranked 21st in run defense in 2025, and Wilkins’ career 45 tackles for loss would have been a welcome addition. However, his ongoing rehab from an injury 18 months ago is a glaring concern.
While Wilkins might not command a high price due to these uncertainties, the Vikings have limited cap space to gamble with. Flores might have insights into Wilkins that other coaches don’t, which could make some red flags less daunting. Still, with promising talents like Jalen Redmond, Levi Drake Rodriguez, and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins emerging, the Vikings might be wise to explore other avenues.
The draft could offer a more secure solution for bolstering their defensive line. While Redmond would become the seasoned vet at just 27, injecting some youth into the roster could be crucial after years of drafting woes. Wilkins' situation presents too many questions for a team that needs stability and success this season.
