With Kyler Murray taking over the starting quarterback job for the Minnesota Vikings, the conversation around J.J. McCarthy has shifted fast. A move away from Minnesota now feels like a real possibility, even if the team’s next step is still unclear.
One idea floating around would send McCarthy back to familiar territory. In a recent trade proposal, the Vikings would ship him to the Los Angeles Chargers and reunite him with Jim Harbaugh, his former head coach at Michigan.
McCarthy’s college run under Harbaugh didn’t come with the kind of massive passing volume some top quarterback prospects get, but it still ended with real success. He helped Michigan win a national championship, and that’s part of why the fit is drawing attention now.
The proposed deal, as laid out by Chris Spiering, would look like this:

McCarthy and Lance are both former first-round selections whose NFL careers haven't unfolded as originally expected. Lance has settled into the backup role behind Herbert, while McCarthy could now find himself in a similar position behind Murray,” Chris Spiering wrote.
It’s not the kind of return that would thrill Minnesota, but if the Vikings are determined to move on and don’t see McCarthy as part of their future, it at least makes sense as a way to reset.
Still, the cleaner approach might be patience. Waiting to see whether Murray can become the quarterback they believe he can be would avoid rushing into a decision.
A lot still has to happen, and almost anything could change the picture. Even so, a Harbaugh-McCarthy reunion doesn’t sound nearly as far-fetched as it once might have.
