Carson Wentz spent Sunday as Minnesota’s backup quarterback. By the time the Vikings were done with the Packers, he had turned into the reason their Week 1 opener ended in a 39-22 comeback win.
Wentz entered after Kyler Murray left the game with a concussion in the first quarter, and he did far more than simply steady the ship. He threw three touchdown passes as Minnesota ripped off 29 unanswered points to take control and finish off Green Bay.
That kind of performance immediately makes the Vikings’ quarterback decision look a lot clearer. Minnesota had drawn questions for putting Wentz ahead of former first-round pick JJ McCarthy on the depth chart, but Sunday gave the team a very public answer.
Murray’s debut in a Vikings uniform ended after he was hit while sliding short of the first-down marker. His helmet came off on the play, and Packers safety Javon Bullard was flagged for 15 yards for unnecessary roughness.
Murray was able to walk to the locker room on his own, but he was later ruled out with a concussion. After the game, coach Kevin O’Connell said Murray would be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.
The uncertainty around Murray now puts Wentz squarely in the spotlight heading into Week 2. It doesn’t wipe away the uneven stretches that have followed him through his NFL career. But it does show Wentz can still deliver real production when the setup is right. For now, the Vikings’ first concern is Murray’s health, and there should be no hurry to bring him back until he clears every step of the concussion protocol.
If Wentz has to keep starting, Minnesota at least knows it can do so with a lot more confidence than it had before kickoff.
