Adrian Peterson has seen this movie before, and that’s why his take on the Vikings’ quarterback battle lands so hard.
Minnesota’s big objective in 2026 is straightforward: don’t let shaky quarterback play sink a roster that has plenty else going for it. Right now, J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray are in training camp fighting for the job that will decide who gets the first shot at making that happen.
Peterson, who was recently named to the Vikings Ring of Honor, was asked about the situation during an interview with RotoGrinders’ Kyle Odegard, and he didn’t soften his stance on McCarthy.
“In my eyes, based on what I’ve seen from J.J., it would definitely be a surprise," Peterson said. "That’s not to take anything away from J.J.
I feel like he’s still a young quarterback. He’s only been around two or three years, and he was injured the first year.
But I feel like he has a lot of growing to do.”
He followed that up by speaking more favorably about Murray.
That perspective carries real weight because Peterson spent 10 seasons in purple and lived through constant instability at the position. He played with 13 different starters during that stretch, and that revolving door helped leave him with just one playoff win in Minnesota, the 2009 victory over Dallas with Brett Favre at quarterback.
It’s also impossible to ignore the parallel Peterson experienced with Christian Ponder, the closest comparison to McCarthy from his time with the Vikings. In both cases, Minnesota drafted a young quarterback earlier than expected and paired him with a veteran stopgap while the team waited to see if the rookie could grow into the role.
For Ponder, that veteran was Donovan McNabb. For McCarthy, it was Sam Darnold.
Ponder ended up taking over as a rookie in 2011 after McNabb struggled. McCarthy, meanwhile, missed his entire rookie season before taking over as the starter after Darnold left in 2025.
Both quarterbacks were surrounded by strong offensive talent, and both struggled to find consistency. Minnesota eventually moved on from Ponder as its starter during his third season in 2013, but by then the damage had already been done.
The Vikings tried to reset at the position by drafting Teddy Bridgewater with the final pick of the first round in 2014, effectively closing the door on Ponder becoming the franchise quarterback they had hoped for.
That history is part of what makes Murray’s arrival in March so notable. It shows the Vikings have no interest in repeating the same mistake. McCarthy is getting a legitimate chance to win the job, but the message from the organization has been clear: the quarterback has to play well, no matter who it is.
And Peterson believes Murray has the ability to deliver that. If he’s right, the 2026 Vikings may avoid the kind of disappointment that followed so many of Peterson’s teams during his run in Minnesota.
