The St. Paul Saints, the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, gave fans a thrilling glimpse into the future, especially after Minnesota’s tough Opening Day loss. The Saints kicked off their season on the road against the Indianapolis Indians, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Triple-A team, and came away with an impressive 4-2 victory.
The lineup was packed with talent, featuring three top-100 prospects according to MLB Pipeline: Walker Jenkins, Kaelen Culpepper, and Emmanuel Rodríguez. On the mound, left-hander Connor Prielipp, a highly touted pitching prospect, took the start. Across the diamond, the consensus No. 1 prospect, shortstop Konnor Griffin, was in action for Indianapolis, adding an extra layer of excitement to the matchup.
Kaelen Culpepper, ranked No. 52 among MLB prospects, was a standout performer. He reached base three times, collected three hits, scored a run, and drove in another. Coming off a strong spring training where he slashed .316/.381/.368, Culpepper looks poised to make a major league impact soon if he keeps up this level of play.
On the pitching side, Connor Prielipp gave Twins fans plenty to cheer about. Over four innings, he allowed just one run on one hit, walked two, and struck out five, using only 61 pitches. With Minnesota’s rotation already deep, Prielipp’s performance suggests he could be a major league call-up later this year, particularly if the team makes moves at the Trade Deadline.
Left fielder Alan Roden also shone brightly, driving in two runs with a first-inning single and drawing four walks. Many believed Roden, who was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays along with pitcher Kendry Rojas, earned a spot on the Twins’ Opening Day roster after hitting .302/.362/.395 in spring training. With his strong defensive skills, he’s likely to see major league action again this season.
The rest of the Saints' lineup contributed across the board. Designated hitter Gabriel Gonzalez walked and scored, Rodríguez also walked and scored as the right fielder, and Orlando Arcia hit a single. Eric Wagaman added an RBI single and a walk, Ryan Kreidler had a single and a walk, and Alex Jackson chipped in with a single.
After Prielipp’s solid outing, right-hander Raul Brito took over, pitching 2 2/3 innings and allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Grant Hartwig closed out the seventh with a strikeout, while Dan Altavilla and Matt Bowman each delivered perfect innings to seal the win.
Though it’s early days, the Saints' performance offers plenty of reasons for optimism about the future of Twins baseball. Fans have every right to be excited about what lies ahead.
