Twins Shake Up Roster: Chafin and Hendriks Released
The Minnesota Twins have made waves with a series of unexpected roster moves. Notably, they released right-handed reliever Liam Hendriks and left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin.
The team also parted ways with infielder Gio Urshela and reassigned catcher Noah Cardenas to the minors. In another shift, right-handed pitcher Zebby Matthews was optioned to Triple-A St.
Paul, paving the way for Mick Abel to join the starting rotation.
The decision to release both Hendriks and Chafin caught many by surprise. Hendriks struggled to control baserunners during his seven spring training outings, allowing nine hits and five walks, though he only gave up three runs. Meanwhile, Chafin had a solid spring with a 3.00 ERA over six innings, but his fastball lacked the velocity the Twins seem to be seeking.
With the season opener against the Baltimore Orioles just around the corner, fans are buzzing about how the bullpen will shape up. Here’s a look at the likely candidates:
Projected Twins' Opening Day Bullpen:
- RHP Cole Sands
- RHP Justin Topa
- RHP Eric Orze
- RHP Dan Altavilla
- RHP Zak Kent
- LHP Anthony Banda
- LHP Taylor Rogers
- LHP Kody Funderburk or RHP Travis Adams
Sands, Topa, Orze, Banda, and Rogers appear to be solid bets for the bullpen. Altavilla has been impressive, showcasing a high-90s fastball both with the Twins and Team Italy. Kent, who had a stint with the Cleveland Guardians last season, has been effective this spring, striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings.
The final bullpen spot seems to be a toss-up between Funderburk and Adams. Funderburk might have the upper hand, given his strong finish last season and a stellar spring performance, boasting a 1.35 ERA with seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. However, if the Twins opt for just two lefties, Adams, who has allowed two runs over 2 2/3 innings this spring, could edge out Funderburk.
As the Twins gear up for Opening Day, the bullpen's final composition will be crucial in setting the tone for the season.
